According to fox news this will let Russia grab control of it.

Just one more thing that Obama is giving up for (no) chance of making friends with those who don't like us.

And, once a again I call him a trailer.

You don't have to own anything: you just have to control a few vital chokepoints and you control the information.

I am not 100% sure of the definition of 'control of the web' but after reading the article I am not sure what there is to complain about.

This did make me chuckle though "U.S. management of the internet has been exemplary and there is no reason to give this away" in the same article as "The decision was made in response to mounting pressure from the international community, which escalated after the disclosure of spying was made public by former National Security Agency contract worker Edward Snowden."

You call him a trailer?

I wan't sure if he mean't traitor or just forgot to add trash after trailer... ;)

Oh dear! A global internet crash would be a very interesting event. If the UN controls the internet, do not expect the natural freedom we enjoy now. China, Russia, and others who like controlling information will begin to work their magic on the rest of the world. The seat of the internet should reside in a country where freedom of speech is held with the highest regard. At least here we can attempt to protect it. Unfortunately those freedoms are eroding here as well. I don't think this is a small topic. It has huge implications.

There's already too much Russian porn as it is. Can't understand a damned thing they're saying - I'm a plot guy yo know.

On a serious note, there does seem to be some concern about ICANN taking on more of a role in managing the internet.

I understand the concerns, but (on the strength of the article) the US can blame nobody but themselves.

I am still confused as to 'controls the internet' though. Dark_Grey made it slightly clearer but I still have trouble understanding how one nation can have this 'control'.

Everyone has to sign up with an internet service provider (ISP) to connect them to the internet, right? Shaw, Verizon, etc.

All you have to do to "control" the internet is control the points where the internet is delivered: pass laws or regulations that the ISP's are forced to follow and let them do the work. Suddenly, your ISP decides which websites you can and can't visit.

Alternatively, you set up filters (China does it this way,) that literally "filter" all the incoming and outgoing internet traffic. Filters can be used to look for certain website requests, keywords, anything you want.

Cheers DG, but...

Sounds simple enough to control one countries surfing, but not the worlds. I am in the UK using Virgin as my ISP. I am having trouble understanding how the 'control' the US currently has effects me through the system you described.

My ISP blocks certain sites but this would be down to UK piracy/content legislation rather than US censorship/control.

I'm not sure either how the US alone would be able to do this. It would have to be a collaboration between all nations using one set of regulations.

..or you could have a rogue agency like the NSA. But even then, many countries are already very outspoken about that intrusion.

That is exactly where it falls over for me, on the world wide scale.

Kind of scales down the impact of the article for me.

Which we can attribute as fallout of the NSA scandal, this is a last ditch effort to avoid the Great Firewalls everywhere... which will happen anyway.

The internet was started by the usa at the end of or shortly after ww2. We were allowed access after the PC came out. So the USA owns the net.

The USA has never stopped anyone from using except child predators.

Looks like we have different versions of the history of the internet to each other Daniel. No need to get into that debate though as this is not the thread for it ;)

My comment about the US was referring to the selling/giving of information related to the Snowden incident (as mentioned in the article) not on any controls set on the web in or by the USA, so there is no need for a knee jerk defence of the USA.

I was hoping you could you please define 'owns the net' for me though. What exactly does this mean from the perspective of the article or in your own terms?

I was under the impression that nobody owned the net as such. What is it the USA do that makes them 'own the net'. Do they host every website in the world, do all internet connections go through connection on US soil or maybe they own all the domain names that are used across the world, or are we talking about patents?

I am honestly having trouble at how a claim to 'control the web' can be made on a global scale. There is a quoted section in the article that briefly goes into details, but it is far to vague and IMO does not relate to the rest of the world, just America.

The internet was started by the USA military so they could communicate with any base no mater what happened. That gives us the ownership. In the late fifties early sixties they allowed the universities to connect to it. Just after main frames came into play. In the eighties they opened it up to everyone shortly after the PC came into being. I joined in the late eighties myself.

It seems that British and France had a version of their own.

But, the world wide web was started by the USA.

Sorry Daniel but you do make me chuckle, I am not disputing you statement, more the way you made it...

Britain and France had a version of their own and joined up with America therefore America owns the web.

Regardless of any differences we have about the history of the web you have shown me nothing to make me believe America owns the web. For example the inventor of test tube babies does not own every test tube baby ever born.

America could control every site hosted on American soil maybe, but what about the rest of the world?

How could they 'own' or 'control' a website owned by the French, hosted by the French on French soil and only accessed by the French?

I am not being purposely argumentative about this, it would be nice to know (outside of conspiracy theories) if one nation has this kind of control of the web, because I am starting to doubt the article and despite my lack of knowledge on American Politics without the answers its just starting to look like an Obama bashing article.

Edit for typos
