Meditation has changed my entire life

I was taught to meditate as a small child, I never truely understood why it was important. I started taking it much more serious as a young Adult, I was using Binaural beats to meditate as I found regular meditation too hard as I couldn't concentrate.

Recently I stopped using binaural beats and started to meditate regularly, I had already seen some positive effects from about 3 months of an hour a day with binural.

I have been meditating without binural beats for about a month now, upto an hour a day. I've seen my addictions crumble away and dissapear alltogether, gambling has no appeal anymore. Smoking cannabis which was a large part of my life has gone completely. I feel a much better person.

Not only that, people have been telling me that i have completely changed. I was once a man with depression, anxiety, addictions and general problems. Now I'm a happy, loving, caring spiritual person.

I've been Told my posture is allot better, I used to slouch and complain of back problems.

My father used to be under allot of stress due to my problems and it was breaking our bond completely. But now he has told me the stress has disappeared completely. Mostly because he knows I am on the right path. And now we seem closer than we have ever been.

Recently I have been able to achieve full body viberation in meditation and although when it first happened it scared me, I have now accepted that it happens and it brings me absolute joy and happiness.

If you have problems in life and you want help, then help yourself and meditate. And be patient... Never give up.

Meditation is a healing process though, it is somthing any human can do. I'm pretty much sure no hobby could have the effect meditation has had on any human. It's more than a Hobby, it's somthing much more special than any material object/experience can give you. I'm speaking from experience here.

True happiness is within, you just have to find it.

Very true. Spending time on yourself and your peace of mind is invaluable. Meditation is an excellent tool - possibly the best in my humble opinion for assessing yourself and what motivates you to do the things you do in life, it opens your awareness and capacity to observe the effects on your body of your actions and provides the space we need to distance ourselves from those behaviours and habits that have distracted and "owned" us throughout our days. It puts the control directly in your hands and I could go on forever but you have said it so well already with your own experience.

I am very happy for you and wish you well in your journey, a new world is opening up before you, so much to explore that old habits did not let you have access to before. Have fun with your new experiences, you deserve it :)

Did you know the human brain produces it's own pychotics that give pleasure?Did you know the pathways to these neuroreceptors can be reworked internaly based on a reward system?Did you know that an overproduction of these biochemicals cause many reactions from a sense of well being to hallucinations of audible, and visual experiences?

Well if he didn't, he does now - all you did was explain how meditation is capable of helping a person change the way their mind attributes pleasure to experiences. So suddenly he gets a greater sense of pleasure in peace of mind than in gambling and smoking, wow how detrimental to a person's health that must be - not.

I believe the chemicals you are referring to are Serotonin, Melotonin and Dimethyltryptamine, Which are secreted in the pineal gland. I'm well aware of the power of these chemicals. And meditation is a way of controlling the production of all of those.

So suddenly he gets a greater sense of pleasure in peace of mind than in gambling and smoking, wow how detrimental to a person's health that must be - not.

That's why people should believe in the power of themselves, and the help of the people that love them.Educating one self in the reality of the power of the brain is alot more rewarding in the long run than dwelling in fantasy and giving thanks to said fantasy.

Third eye can be like this: When we visualise, we 'see' images in our minds right? Or..in the 'minds eye'. hence the term - third eye

There is no third eye.A fresh water Crayfish has a photo sensitve receptor in it's tail so it knows if that part is exposed while hiding under a rock.This came about through evolution.We evolved to make weapons to fend off being eaten.

A lot of the claims made for meditation is similar to various alternative medicine claims in that they are not supported by good research and can be thought of as hype.

I have no doubt that done consistently and either under good guidance or after reading about it and how to do breathing exercises, that this type of meditation helps one calm the mind, deal with cravings, stop worrying so much and even get to sleep. It is also helpful with chronic pain but there are pills for that too. Severe pain definitely needs medical intervention.

The type of mindfulness taught to monks is I fear a life-long discipline. I don't doubt that it is real and that the principles can be learned, but it takes time and dedication that I don't have: I've got better things to do, to put it bluntly. It's not something you get on a weekend retreat.

ChangedSoul, Is this the same thing as Yoga? That aside, I've always been curious to try meditation, but I don't seem to have time or patience for it. How did you get started? Thanks for sharing your story by the way, it's not every day someone overcomes their addictions like that, so congratulations on that. :)

How would you know what is more rewarding and what is not? I don't see this person fantasizing about anything, and If you are into education you should spend more time reading about neural plasticity and the benefits of meditation.

How would you know what is more rewarding and what is not? I don't see this person fantasizing about anything, and If you are into education you should spend more time reading about neural plasticity and the benefits of meditation.

It's just about trading one thing that is more harmfull for another thing which is less harmfull.It's very simple, and does not need woo woo which you do do.

Ooops...here is clarification.

It's just about trading one thing that is more harmfull (drugs/risky behaviour) for another thing which is less harmfull (hobbies/relaxion or meditation techniques/religious research.)

Oh yea; monks are happy people, at least the older ones. They don't exactly give you training in happiness though but in mindfulness -- knowing what's going on and not just wandering through space and time. Agreed. Meditation has to apart of your life style to have any long term affects. Maybe a retreat might kick off this lifestyle but its not going to do a lot of good other than maybe give somone some pleasant memories.

I think your mind is clouded, you seem to be mixing up things that are totally irrelevant with meditation.

Hobbies and religious research has nothing todo with Meditation, niether do you get the same effects from either.

From what you are saying, you obviously do not practise meditation.

Meditation is about making the mind stronger, there are no bad effects from learning to control the mind.

Yoga is different, it's more to do with physical.

Meditation is learning to control the mind, start off by sitting in a chair comfortably. Try to clear the mind and concentrate on your breathing, make sure you are aware of every breath you take, if a thought comes into your mind, you should send it away and go back to your breathing. Keep doing this for as long as you feel you can concentrate, don't push yourself too much to start with.

The best advice I can give you is to never give up, you will feel the benefits eventually. Try to make it a regular thing,Practise is important and you will find it easier and easier as you progress. If you continue to meditate, eventually you will have personal spiritual experiences. Trust me, it's worth it. the first time I had a spiritual experiance it was amazing, it just shows that there is more to life than we percieve.

What follows cannot be described or transmitted to others. This kind of meditative mind, if we wish to call it that, is a way of life 24/7.

Mind is the ego, the "I" that creates the clutter of thought, desires and fears. When mind is properly silent the ego dissolves, the result is there is no longer thought that is in continuous conflict with itself. What a relief!

If we meditate for some period of time every day, then go back to our usual self the rest of the day, of what benefit is meditation?

Just my views on the subject.

I totally agree with you on the matter of the Mind and the Ego.

The benefit of meditation when we are not meditating? We become better observers of the mechanical ego, it's desires and it's manipulations in our mind. Hence, when we return to meditation we have an opportunity to comprehend the "agenda" or "desire" of specific attributes of the ego and having brought them into the light we are in a position to remove their influence over us. It is an "I know you, I know what you are doing" realization that destroys the hold of that particular known aspect of the ego permanently. It is self knowledge and conscious awareness that we find easier and easier to practice in our daily dealings in the world as we take back control of the manner in which we wish our mind to operate, rather than our desires making those decisions for us.
