No clue who RSM is but if this is true it raising and interesting point. What does everyone else think? are we polluting the crap out of our oceans? and if so what possible solutions do people have?

Yes. For one thing, Plastics breaking down into micro BB's is becoming a major Poison in the Oceans.

http://news.discover...ease-120509.htm

- Plastic waste floating in the North Pacific has increased 100-fold over the last 40 years.

- Around 13,000 pieces of plastic litter are found in every square kilometre of sea.

- The plastic is providing new habitat for ocean insects called "sea-skaters," which prey on plankton and fish eggs.

The vast swirl of plastic waste floating in the North Pacific has increased 100-fold over the last 40 years, according to a research paper published Wednesday.

And scientists warned the killer soup of microplastic -- particles smaller than five millimeters (0.2 inches) -- threatened to alter the open ocean's natural environment.

Scientists had previously thought plastics broke down only at very high temperatures and over hundreds of years.

The researchers behind a new study, however, found that plastic breaks down at cooler temperatures than expected, and within a year of the trash hitting the water.

The Japan-based team collected samples in waters from the U.S., Europe, India, Japan, and elsewhere, lead researcher Katsuhiko Saido, a chemist with the College of Pharmacy at Nihon University in Japan, said via email.

All the water samples were found to contain derivatives of polystyrene, a common plastic used in disposable cutlery, Styrofoam, and DVD cases, among other things, said Saido, who presented the findings at a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Washington, D.C., today.

Plastic, he said, should be considered a new source of chemical pollution in the ocean.

....plastic pollution in the world's oceans is now ubiquitous. The EU estimates that there are 100,000 tonnes of plastic in our oceans, while a recent study on plastic accumulation in the North Atlantic and Caribbean found the highest concentration of plastic debris to exceed 200,000 pieces per square kilometre. In some cases, this concentration is higher than that of plankton - the most basic form of marine life, which underpins the stability of the oceans and atmospheric climate regulation as a whole.

The watery realm, upon which so much life depends, has quite simply become a plastic soup.

Well the Japanese have not helped matters, or all the tests which have been done in the Pacific, the list is enless. But we will destroy ourselves before the Oceans.

  • 2 weeks later...

Its a pitty humanity became so smart "in distroying the planet" and so stupid in saving it... i think the animals are doing much better then us and then whats the definition of smart if we are distroying ourselfs, our sea, our nature, our planet or should i say their planet because we were not here first.

I'm not saying its right, but the earth will change as it has for billions of years and we will disappear eventually or became a space faring race.

Life will change as well we will force the oceans ecosystems to evolve to deal with our dirt legacy and things will just be different. There is no other way.

That sort of attitude completely abnegates taking responsibility and changing our destructive ways. It may ultimately be true but we should at least acknowledge and fight our drive to render ourselves extinct along with the majority of higher life forms.
