Revelation 14:20

And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

A brother in Christ commented in a recent thread about the preciseness of Bible prophecy. But Bible prophecy has a decidedly oriental and poetic license. It should never be read too literally for instance:

Genesis 13:16

16 And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.

Were the children of Abram really going to number as the dust of the earth or the stars of the heaven. This verse actually looks ultimately forward to the New Covenant and Christianity. As there are over a 1 billion Christians in the world today. In contrast, world Jewry makes up 0.2% of the world population and 2.0% of the US population.

Nonetheless, God had fulfilled this promise with the Jews see Numbers 23:10, Deuteronomy 1:10, and 10:22. As He likewise already fulfilled the land promises of the Genesis 15:18-21, see Joshua 21:43-45; 23:14-15; 2 Samuel 8:3; 1 Kings 4:21, 24; 2 Chronicles 9:26; Nehemiah 9:8, etc.

None of God's promises had failed.

Now back to the verse at hand and the topic of the God's preciseness of prophecy.

1,600 stadia or 1,600 furlongs is just about 184 miles. This is the measurement of the Palestine from North to South. Can all of Palestine be filled with blood up to the height of 5 feet? Or is this verse speaking of the first Jewish-Roman war 66AD-73AD where the Romans filled the land of Palestine with blood, mass slaughter and enslavement of Jewish men, women, and children.

Indeed this is where the eagles amassed and were the days of vengeance upon faithless Israel who slew their Lord and Saviour. Their Messiah. God exacted vengeance upon this generation for the all the blood of the prophets numbering from Abel to Zecharias.

The destruction of the Jerusalem and second temple officially inaugerated the death of the Old Covenant, the levitical priesthood, and temple sacrifices as spoken of in Daniel 9:26-27.

Grace and peace.
