How is this different than say Google being blocked in China? Or Turkey attempting to shut down Twitter (and failing).

I don't think that one nation can shut down the internet. The best they could do would be to shut it down as much as possible within their borders. North Korea seems to be very successful at this.

Its a disturbing thing to read as I perceive that this would be the or a way to brainwash citizens locked inside of a local WEB structure, not good for anybody really

This is really what a borderless does not mean ~ all it means is it is a world of virtual borders with no restriction on visas ~ soon it will change ... and it starts with the users being reliably fixed to a virtual identity ~ the tech it is there already nowadays ~ just that now the profits is still too painful to leave behind without some ~guarantee~ of greater profits going on with the next evolution of Net/Web protocol ~ 'the cloud' is is nothing more than some glorified member's list ~

It is really sad to see what is happening in Russia today.

Putin started out pretty goood. He stabilised the economy and he gave Russia a sense of hope in the future, after 75 years of communism and 8 chaotic years of Yeltsin.

But then something went wrong, and he has become more and more like a tzar.

Looking at Russias/Soviet history they have had an almost unbroken succesion of bad leaders. I think Gorbatjov pretty much was the only Russian/Soviet leader who actually cared about the average Russian.

The sad thing is that Russia has allways had everything that could make them great, but somehow their leaders never fails to screw it up.

Either everyone is looking at some really weird porn i don't get why every country wants there own internet. Spying is nothing new. So all of these countries pointing fingers at the USA should stop b****ing about the mass surveillance because everyone does it. Russia is just mad that it lacks the capabilities to do so and it is way behind China.

Putin denied there was mass surveillance of citizens.

Sure. Thats what the KGB is for.^

A purely Russian-run system could make it easier for the Russian intelligence services to monitor and control traffic.

**** no. I'd choice good old USA over Russia any time of the week. That sentence mind as well state that Russia is just jealous of the United States superiority when it comes to spying.

Interesting wake-up call. Have we have all become too dependent upon technology? There was a time when we were untethered, the adventurers, the masters. Evolved to explore and take risks. Instead, we retreat to our armchairs placated and subservient to our master, technology.

Maybe unplugging from the internet and turning off our TVs will become the sane person's tin-foil hat.

This is just a tiny fraction of the non-Wiki links about Skypes history.

Now it is your turn to provide links about your alternate history of Skype.

He is getting more like Stalin by the minute, paranoid.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Russian vs. U.S. Internet.

A nice choice; guess which one I'll go with?!

Not that I love or trust the FBI, NSA, but the KGB/NKVD/FSB are worse.

I don't know about their Internet, but it seems Russians have a better moral compass than some.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/10825041/Britons-more-likely-to-support-torture-than-Russians.html

"The British public is more likely to condone torture practices than people in Russia and almost half are against an outright ban."

"Some 29 per cent of Britons said practices such as beatings, scalding and needles rammed under fingernails could be justified if it is to protect the public – compared to 25 per cent in Russia."

Thing is, this sort of issue is not about the ordinary people. It is about the governments. And Putin pretty much takes the biscuit internationally at the moment.

Funny thing about governments, they're made of and reflect the values of, the people... ever think that if less Americans supported "enhanced interrogations" that our government wouldn't be so cavalier about using them and perhaps we wouldn't have slipped down the slope into extra-judicial targeting and killing of Americans?

If Putins values reflected the values of the Russian people, why does he have to rig elections ?
