Man in the Mirror

Recently one of our Gralien Report listeners, Sylvana, contacted us about a strange image (above) that appeared in a photograph she took while visiting the Amsterdam Brewhouse, a restaurant in Toronto, Canada. After hearing about a previous Gralien Report Podcast where we discussed mirror gazing and ghosts appearing in reflective surfaces, she reached out and sent along a copy of the photograph, as well as her commentary on the circumstances that led to its capture.

Cool story, amazing face too, like a Grey face made to look human.

I wonder if it was a favourite sitting place of a past diner....

This is just an often photographed animal from a weird angle. Odd angled pictures of this animal are responsible for almost all Bigfoot, ghost, alien, chupacabra, Norwegian, werewolve etc, pictures.

Here is a clear image:

It's easy to see how it could be mistaken for a ghost in the mirror.

From that page, the claimant says:

Freaked out, I sent the picture to a friend that is a video production specialist. He broke the picture into shards on the screen. He explained that each shard of the sconce was reflecting normally. The centre of it was concave and the images in it were upside down, also normal. The one shard that wasn’t normal was the one with the face…he said it seemed like the face was not reflected but was inside the shard. He could not explain the anomaly.

First up, a video production specialist does not equate to anyone with any great ability to analyse imagery. In this case, despite not having an image of the scene he assures us that the other refelections are 'normal', and he seems needlessly fascinated with the concave centre and then says that the Michael Jackson 'shard' is anomalous.. why - because it isn't upside down? Of course it isn't, flat mirrors do not invert things. And this is the person who would have done the photoshopping, claiming that she knows someone who is a supposed expert .. and that alleged person can't explain it... Duh. Give me a break. It could just be a person who happened to pass by - does she seriously observe every single person in the room while she is taking an image with her eye up to a DSLR? And without seeing the original files (these are NOT raw files!!) there is no way to verify that it wasn't a simple paste - I can't imagine an easier image to fake... Also, the 70cm 'approximation' is just silly - a tiny non-flatness in that shard would cause havoc in the size and amount of focus blur. I'd like to see their actual numbers and all the assumptions for that w-a-g

Shallow article, the usual anonymous 'expert', silly unsupported faux-analysis, no originals.... = no further interest from me.

Person takes photo of perfectly explainable and not particularly exciting thing.

Person then invents a tall tale surrounding the events and it then gets reported as some sort of paranormal oddity. Some half-witted non-expert declares it as some sort of anomaly.

Nope, haven't seen this a thousand times before.

That face looks too solid to be a ghost. I call BS. Also why did the camera guy snap a picture of a random light?

She might want to send that Nikon D5200 back and have it replaced. That's a 24 megapixel camera but hers appears to be taking "raw" pictures at the resolution of a cheap camera phone from 10 years ago.

I'm no professional photographer or analyst but I can tell that the "analysis" is BS. The man in the photograph is "indigenous" in appearance and has a "white stripe" across his face? No, it's just a normal dude with the light reflecting off his upper cheeks. And as ChrLz pointed out above, the shard is flat and thus wouldn't produce an inverted appearance.

The comments are pretty pathetic. It saddens me that people so easily fall for any dreck they read online which confirms their beliefs.

Never go to creepypasta then, The stories are terrible and you get people who swear it is legit.

This (from the comments section) is awesome:

"I looks like an ET to me. The eyes are perfect for the classic image. That it has been suggested by a “science guy” that the image is INSIDE the mirror, that brings it into the ability of ET to penetrate solid objects [long story] . So I vote for an ET watcher here. Yes creepy – watching through the mirror, invisible – Motivation is the question. The “abduction” word comes to mind. I am going to check a source to hopefully get an opinion. Nameste’"

BTW, I decided to post some comments on that site, to stir the pot a little and see if we could elicit the RAW images. The comment is awaiting moderation, but here's my observations, for posterity:

So just to get this straight...; It was provided in confidence, but the member here (who hasn't decided to join in the discussion), was named?

Only half the restaurant was busy, yet while she was talking to her friend *and* taking this photo she could be sure that no-one else was there..?

She cropped the photo down to just that light and posted it, without noticing the face..? And her stomach 'turned' when she finally saw the face..? (Looks pretty stomach UNturning to me..)

She took other shots to duplicate the effect - where are those..?

Why did the supposed video-prod expert not explain how he came to the conclusion that the image was 'internal'? And given the person making the claim is also the one referring to a supposed expert, forgive my doubts..

I'd love to see exactly how 'they' calculated the 70cm distance and what assumptions 'they' made.

She says she gave you raw shots from a D5200 - why have you only presented reduced size, low quality, UNraw, exif-stripped thumbnails, one in png and one in jpeg format (so they have obviously be processed differently)..?

I'd be happy to give a much better informed opinion given access to the REAL raw images, straight from the camera. But frankly, I have my doubts that will happen, given all the warning signs I've listed above. If this is your normal standards for an 'investigation', then I'll stick to Unexplained Mysteries, where this was brought up and *would* be properly discussed if the claimant (or you guys) got brave and posted the original files.

BTW, this *would* be trivially easy to Photoshop, so if you haven't taken steps to verify the originality of the images, and simply reject that idea.. well, I'm sure you'll get a lot more 'mysteries' that way.

But do carry on.

OK, so I believe in the paranormal and I like to believe in ghosts, but my criteria for seeing one is that it's not a ghost if it's: 1) an orb 2) ectoplasm 3) anything reflected in glass, a window, a mirror, bushes, or tree branches.

Reflections are incredible. The sidewalk under my window is shaded by an awning, so I can't see anyone if I look straight down from my 3rd floor window. However, I can look across the street to see people walking under my window in the reflection of the windows of the building across the street. When I lived in a trailer, I could look out the window there and see a reflection of my entire living room in reverse - in 3D. Seriously, it looked like you could see my sofa (which was across the room) sitting in the bushes across the yard. But glass is funny that way.

Wow, every day he wakes up must be one long thrilling conspiracy laden narrative from start to end, I'd be surprised if he has any time for reality beyond essential bodily functions.

That's pretty much the way it is with me. "Frickin' Orbs" just won't cut it, and certainly not half formed images in glass surfaces, among trees, etc.

An apparition pretty much has to appear in front of me... Plus: that apparition will have to agree to show up to a scientific lab for study by experts and scientists on an ongoing basis. That's what 's needed for me to believe, because then I wouldn't need belief as I'd start to have observed facts (whose facts/data MUST be able to be reproduced in other labs with similar result sets).

I would sorta like to hear is "long story" of how ET has the ability to penetrate solid objects. On second thought, no I don't.

Just because it looks like a face does not mean it is a face. Also, we are taking the photographer's word that no one else was close enough to have been caught by the mirror.
