Waspie_Dwarf Posted April 30, 2014 #26 Share Posted April 30, 2014 Absolutely incorrect...unlike Cheetahs (which are pretty much the size of a grown adult) Lions will and have been known to attack and actively seek out and attack humans as prey. That's actually what Sundew said. Read it again, he said: unlike Lions, Cheetahs don't view humans as a prey item. (my emphasis). Before arguing you might want to make sure you have read and understood a post first.

Waspie_Dwarf Posted April 30, 2014 #28 Share Posted April 30, 2014 There is nothing scary about cheetahs. The cheetah in this picture is Nyana-Spier. At the time he was officially the fastest land animal ever clocked. The short, fat hairy person is me.

FROM WIKI: The Peregrine Falcon, renowned for its speed, reaching over 322 km/h (200 mph) during its characteristic hunting stoop (high speed dive), making it the fastest member of the animal kingdom. According to a National Geographic TV programme, the highest measured speed of a Peregrine Falcon is 389 km/h (242 mph).
+DieChecker Posted May 1, 2014 Author #30 Share Posted May 1, 2014 (edited) Math time! I estimate its size at about 0.25 cm. It move at 322 body lengths per second. That means it moves about 8 cm/sec. That's .08 m/sec. 4.8 meters per minute. 288 meters per hour. 0.288 km/hr. That's less than a fifth of a mile per hour--about twenty times slower than a person walking. Relative speed? Sure, it's stupid fast. Absolute speed? Not even in the picture. Actually 322 times 0.25cm is 80.5 cm, almost a meter. 0.805 cm/s = 4830 cm/min = 2898 m/hr = 2.9 km/hr (1.8 mph).... or about the speed of a walking human. That seems pretty fast for a grain of rice to me.... I think you lost a 0 in there somewhere. Edited May 1, 2014 by DieChecker

Shiloh17 Posted May 1, 2014 #32 Share Posted May 1, 2014 Last I knew, a mite wasn't an animal. Cheetah still the winner in my books.
Waspie_Dwarf Posted May 1, 2014 #33 Share Posted May 1, 2014 Last I knew, a mite wasn't an animal. Well it's not a mineral or a vegetable. It is quite definitely part of the animal kingdom. Mites, along with ticks, are small arthropods belonging to the subclass Acari (also known as Acarina) and the class Arachnida. Source: wikipedia An arthropod is an invertebrate animal having an exoskeleton (external skeleton), a segmented body, and jointed appendages. Lobotomy Posted May 1, 2014 #35 Share Posted May 1, 2014 (edited) So how would this constitute the Cheetah 'losing its title as the fastest land animal' exactly? In that case an ant is stronger than an African Bull Elephant. That that then! Edited May 1, 2014 by Lobotomy
theotherguy Posted May 1, 2014 #36 Share Posted May 1, 2014 Actually 322 times 0.25cm is 80.5 cm, almost a meter. 0.805 cm/s = 4830 cm/min = 2898 m/hr = 2.9 km/hr (1.8 mph).... or about the speed of a walking human. Even so, 1.8 mph is a pretty slow walk--I believe a casual stroll is about 3 mph for most people.
SaraT Posted June 2, 2014 #37 Share Posted June 2, 2014 So I ask you. Would you rather be chased by a cheetah or by a California mite?
toast Posted June 2, 2014 #38 Share Posted June 2, 2014 So I ask you. Would you rather be chased by a cheetah or by a California mite? Well, if the cheetah is of the size of a California mite and the California mite is of the size of a cheetah I would say the cheetah is ok for me.
