[Merged] Oldest Image of Jesus Found

27 posts in this topic

A team of Spanish archaeologists have discovered an image of what they assume is the earliest known depiction of Jesus Christ.

The image is painted on to the wall of an underground stone structure located in the ancient Egyptian city of Oxyrhynchus, about 160km south of Cairo.

Experts believe the stone structure, dating to the sixth century, served as the crypt of a writer and priests.

That wouldn't be a surprise. In the roman catacombs there is one of Jesus as the Good Shepherd also dressed in a short tunic carrying a sheep.

Okay, sounds like it could be interesting.

Nevermind. There are plenty of images of Jesus that predate the sixth century:

Here is an updated article about the find.

CORRECTION: A previous headline of this article incorrectly suggested the depiction found in Egypt was the earliest known; it is among the earliest, but other images thought to be of Jesus predate it. The article has also been updated to reflect doubts about the authenticity of the 'Savior of Galilee' booklet, and a reference to the tomb of a scribe has been removed to clarify that it is not where the image was discovered.

What does the actual image look like? It can't be the one on the link. Just checked out the link provided by GreenmansGod. This guy has no beard and even looks like he's wearing shorts.

I think it wise to understand that IF Jesus really lived, he would have probably looked like many others of the day. Today we see Jews in London (and elsewhere) with black coats, black hats and beards. Try picking just one out of the crowd!

Same with many middle eastern countries, beards, moustache, hairy eyebrows lol: (No disrespect intended)

Even the average white European male looks similar, mostly with short cropped hair and no facial hair...broadly speaking that is

True, but atleast it's a painting and not an apparition on a toasted slice of bread or on some treebark.

And because it is a painting, it makes it true? Just like everything on the internet. The people finding this WANT it to be Jesus, ergo it is. At any rate, it's someone's idea of what Jesus looked like. Just remember, perception becomes reality whether or not it actually is.

They assume???

They assume they have found images of a mythical figure!

Wouldn't it be good if modern science could just "assume" and everybody took it as truth!

Open your eyes people!

About this question previously unchecked: There is indeed a news in La Vanguardia concerning Josep Padró stating a hypothetical primitive depiction of Christ. Google egiptologos-catalanes-oxirrinco-escriba.

Images of what is supposed to be Jesus are to be expected. There are images of Jupiter all over the ancient world to be found.

Spanish archaeologists have discovered what may be one of the earliest depictions of Jesus in an ancient Egyptian tomb.

Painted on the walls of a mysterious underground stone structure in the ancient Egyptian city of Oxyrhynchus, about 100 miles south of Cairo, the image shows a young man with curly hair and dressed in a short tunic.

“He raises his hand as if making a blessing,” said Egyptologist Josep Padró, who has spent over 20 years excavating sites in the area

The image in the Yahoo article is of Justin Beiber playing Jesus. The real image is a lot less distinct and, frankly, not up to Roman portrait standards of the time.

Some man must have been pretty famous to have his portrait with his curly hair on a booklet and on a stone in Egypt.

Those lead books are very interesting. I hope they figure them out someday.
