Huge 'ocean' discovered in Earth's interior

A massive reservoir of water three times the volume of all the world's oceans lies 700km underground.

Jules Verne's depiction of a huge sea in the center of the Earth may have been closer to reality than previously believed according to new research that has identified a massive volume of water contained between the rocks in the planet's mantle.

Incredible, I guess water is the one thing that we will never run out of (even though it's salt).

The water is actually locked in rocks, can't remember what it is called. So no life forms or anything like that down under the Earth's Mantle.

That Kevin Costners hit movie back in the 90s, or was it 80s, the water something... it'd be like that if all that water was forced to surface

Maybe microbial?

If all that raised up to the surface, we truly would be the blue planet.

I wonder what is inside The Moon. That much water could be our rocket fuel to Mars etc, or for a moon base, etc.

So there is enough water for Noahs Ark then?

Well, there is an interesting passage in Genesis:

"In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights." Genesis 7:11-12 (King James)

People have said that 40 days and nights of rain could not have covered the earth, but the passage suggests there was water below ground as well. Now scientists tell us the water below ground is three times greater than the volume of our oceans. Interesting.

Another couple of weeks and they'll be posting a Hosepipe Ban as they do every time the sun shines for more than 3 days.

You were right on your fisrt post XenoFish, and great question about life-forms.

It would be very narrow minded to suppose that there would be nowhere under the earth's crust where there was not a huge out-cropping of water, or reservoir in many places where life might have been continuing for millions of years undisturbed. Earth’s a mighty big place, weighing some 5.9721986x1021t metric tons, that’s a lot of space, too much space, for anyone to say there couldn’t be any vast underground oceans or lakes.

This is a great post, this is exactly how the world of science is supposed to function. Science Fiction writers create the arena for new science, called (Speculative Science), and regular scientists apply foundational scientific principles to PUSH those boundaries for new discoveries and developments. Scientists who cannot dream and fantasize will never discover anything.

Confirmation bias much?

WOW, That Jules Verne was dead on with his books. Maybe he was a time traveler from the distant

future and got stranded so he wrote about his timeline. :D

Yes, even in this computer age there's still a lot for us to learn. This is a prime example of it.

Just when we think we know it all... Surprise!

I wonder what type of life forms would have developed in these underground oceans?

This is exactly what I was thinking, given the discovery of life in the most extreme of circumstances and environments on this little planet already, surely wonders await us deep beneath in Earth's 'Second Sea'. Thought provoking article!
