What Sound Did T. rex Actually Make?

33 posts in this topic

It's an iconic scene in every dinosaur movie: the huge, conquering carnivorous theropod rears back and lets out a terrifying bellow. But how close to reality are these sounds? Do we have any ways of using science to figure out what dinosaurs and other stem-birds may have sounded like? Do we have evidence that they made sounds at all?

I think they said, "Meep!"

Really, I think a T-rex making a hollow bellow or clicking noises like they say in the article would be even more frightening.

Very interesting article, I've often wondered if they made sounds as todays lizards seem to be silent, I guess we can only assume they made some noise .

I like to think they meowed. Jurassic park would be full of large lizards pretending to be cats. Give them a giant ball of yarn and they are content.

Interesting. However the article assumes that the Dinos weren't color blind as many animals seem to be or so we think.

Surely this is just an academic question as there is no way to verify that ACTUAL noise...

It could have sounded like Justin Bieber in a blender for all we know ..... oooh I just made myself really happy

This is true. Paleontologists think they had some sort of color vision.

Mine makes a listing whimpering sound.

However when I unleash him on moralists and gov't officials he tends to make a growling-purr sounds intermixed with shattering of bones and a soft liquid squelch of tearing organs.

It would be quite an odd "out-of-character" feeling if you ran into a T-rex and he went..>>

I wonder if the urge to pet him would take over..........or maybe not.

I'd think the T-Rex made sounds similar to a crocodile. Low grunts and stuff. I don't think they ran around roaring all the time though like most shows portray. Wouldn't make sense; especially when hunting. I mean, what animal is gonna go hunting then when it has its prey in sight, starts roaring or making all sorts of racket?
