UM-Bot Posted June 28, 2014 #1 Share Posted June 28, 2014 Scientists have identified a new species of shrew which possesses a trunk like that of an elephant. Despite its tiny size, the bizarre looking elephant shrew is actually more closely related to its namesake than to mice. shrooma Posted June 28, 2014 #2 Share Posted June 28, 2014 QUOTE- it’s exciting to think that there are still small areas of the world where even the mammal fauna is unknown and waiting to be explored," said Dr Jack Dumbacher. . ain't that the truth! .
+Hammerclaw Posted June 28, 2014 #3 Share Posted June 28, 2014 (edited) Wipe out all the megafauna and in a couple of million years this little creature's descendants might look remarkably like elephants. There are, all over the world, all sorts of small animals, each ready to fill an abandoned ecological niche should the opportunity present itself. South America is replete with small to medium sized species that seem in the very process of stepping up. Frank Merton Posted June 30, 2014 #10 Share Posted June 30, 2014 I read an item today that pointed out that the relationship between these non-shrews and elephants is grossly exaggerated, and that about the only thing further away on the evolutionary scale are real shrews. These little buggers have noses like that for eating ants and the proboscis evolved independently of elephant trunks.
