This was due to problems with resolution due to the technology of the day. Today we know there are no (water filled, artificial) canals on Mars. Mr Bergrun's suggesting of aliens working the rings of Saturn is a parallel to the canals of Mars. Better equipment and later missions have shown his idea to be completely false.
