An Irish priest has warned his parishioners against taking part in yoga, describing it as "unsavoury".

Fr Padraig O'Baoill, a parish priest in Gweedore, County Donegal, issued the warning in a parish newsletter.

The weekend bulletin stated Catholic parishioners should not "endanger" their souls by practising yoga, tai chi or reiki.

Ms Graham added that the practice of yoga in Western countries was now "largely divorced" from religious associations.

Those who oppose yoga for religious reasons clearly don't understand this statement. Yoga is good for helping you with balance and stretching of your muscles to alleviate a lot of the pain we deal with on a regular basis.

i agree with the good Padre when it comes to reiki and while it won't endanger your soul, it will endanger your intelligence and your wallet.

As to the other two, he's a bit off base.

westerners mainly use the limited physical postures of yoga as an exercise program...

that branch of yoga, out of the eight, is mainly for beginning work, clearing blockages that impede progress in the other 7 arms that deal with how we work in the world on a daily basis and garner real spiritual merit with love, compassion and higher vibration

Interesting - when you get the story from the Irish newspaper, instead of the BBC, it has a completely different slant - go figure. Less head scratching, locals completely defend the priest, other area priests are all on board. Taken from the point of view of HIS beliefs and his own faith, I can see where he's coming from. They would seem to be opposed.

Don't spend your money on yoga, reiki or tai chi classes, that is less you can give to the church!

I can't. It is a stunningly ignorant comment made by someone who owes people a little research and judgement.

Anyone supporting this idiot might like to put some justification. Like, JC telling people not to stretch those muscles.
