seeder Posted July 17, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted July 17, 2014 Another source The passenger plane was expected to enter Russian airspace at 5:20pm local time, but never did, a Russian aviation industry source was cited by Reuters. “The plane crashed 60km away from the border, the plane had an emergency beacon,” ITAR-TASS cited its source. The Donetsk People’s Republic, where fighting continues between Kiev and opposition, has rejected any involvement in the incident, as there are reports that the plane was shot down. It said its self-defense forces just don’t have such military equipment. http://rt.com/news/173616-malaysian-crash-ukraine-border/

skookum Posted July 17, 2014 #6 Share Posted July 17, 2014 Breaking news on Sky, 295 on board. http://news.sky.com/story/1302864/malaysian-plane-shot-down-with-295-on-board Plane was apparently leaving Ukraine when it was hit by a surface to air missile. All speculation at the moment but it doesn't look good. Some sources saying it may have come from separatists, however Russia also has form for mistaking aircraft like the Korean airliner 25 years ago. Whatever the truth it is truly horrible.
seeder Posted July 17, 2014 Author #7 Share Posted July 17, 2014 BBC live updates is now saying 16:50: The Associated Press says one of its journalists saw a similar launcher near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhe earlier on Thursday. 16:50: An advisor to the Ukrainian interior minister, Anton Gerashenko, says the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 metres (33,000 feet) when it was "hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher", in a post on his Facebook page, according to the Associated Press. 16:42: Aviation expert Chris Yates says the plane would have been full, if reports that it was carrying 295 passengers are correct. He says the plane would have been flying at a height of some six miles (9.7km). There was nothing wrong with the aircraft until the missile hit it.
+and-then Posted July 17, 2014 #17 Share Posted July 17, 2014 Putin had been saying that he was going to make them pay for the arty shell that killed a civilian in Russia a few days ago. Seems reasonable to assume he might have been attempting to follow through on the threat. So sad for the families...

Popular Post Space Commander Travis Posted July 17, 2014 Popular Post #21 Share Posted July 17, 2014 Does frankly seem bloody stupid to be routing flights over that area, this could very easily happen through sheer confusion without any need for frankly bonkers conspiracy theories..
Rafterman Posted July 17, 2014 #22 Share Posted July 17, 2014 Just in from CNN: The Facebook page of Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to the Ukrainian interior ministry, claims that a Malaysia-bound civilian aircraft was "shot down" over Ukraine by "terrorists" operating a Buk surface-to-air missile system. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on his website: "We do not exclude that the plane was shot down and confirm that the Ukraine Armed Forces did not fire at any targets in the sky." Gerashchenko's post says that 280 passengers and 15 crew members were killed.

toast Posted July 17, 2014 #24 Share Posted July 17, 2014 Should they really be flying commercial flights there? That was my first thought when I saw the news. Have checked flightradar24 and approx 10 A/C were active in Ukraine area.

Agreed, one article mentioned it never entered Russian airspace, so I assume it was supposed/expected to....not that this route would've been any safer either. It will be an interesting 'blame game' w/ so many possible rocket launch sites in the area. R.I.P for the flight.
