i dont really remember any book in paticular that scared me. i remeber Bag of Bones by Stephen King had me on the edge of my seat for about a half hour. i guess things that scare me the most are things that have actually happened to people. i like to read about serial killers, and that stuff scares me a lot. that was a good question.

I read The Charles Manson case study , actually did a book report on it for High School . I didn't find that scary though just Twisted.

I wouldn't say this is the scariest book of them All, but it's The Mailman by Bentley Little. It goes to show how little we think of those that are in our lives that we never think of.

Stephen King does it for me every time, espacially IT and The Shining

Also his short story collections are very good, one story in particular, can't recall the title, it was about a father and son who while driving to the supermarket, encounter giant mutant insects who start killing everyone. Sounds crap put like that, but it was a story that really played on your mind. blink.gif

I am pretty sure that one is The Mist, but I could be mistaken. Supposedly there is a movie in the process based upon that story.

Yes I think your right! smile.gif I rember now, it started with a mist.

It was in the same book with the story about the Vampire Pilot which they've also made into a film. I'm so crap with titles rolleyes.gif

I'd like to see the film but they never do justice to the story. sad.gif

BC, Halo... I think there was even a TV movie made of "The Mist".... Wasn't very good though...

Most of the times the books -are- better.

I agree with Castor on Bag o'Bones... that book has kept me up some nights... I will never look at fridge magnets the same way. scared.gif

Bloated Corpse... I'm pretty sure that I was thinking of "The Mist"....

But really... if you do read minds, we should meet up someday... like... in a casino?

For me the scariest books I've read were:

'The Haunting Of Hill House' by Shirley Jackson

'Communion' by Whitley Strieber

The Bible (really)

I've read a few bits in the Bible , but I couldn't work most of it out . (I think there's something wrong with me). I tried to read it from cover to cover once but I couldn't get through all the begats and begots. rolleyes.gif

I live for horror movies and books, so not much scares me. The creepier the better for me. I read a lot of John Saul books, some are creepy, and some just get you thinking, like, "What would happen if this were true?"

When it comes to movies, "The Others" creeped me out a little. But I live for giant creature movies, like, "Anaconda", "Deep Blue Sea", and stuff like that. What if creatures of that size really existed?? Now thats a scary thought.

  • 6 months later...

The Woman In Black by Susan Hill is quite scary, as are the stage and TV adaptations.

The Turn of the Screw, Henry James, has its moments.

I particularly like short stories of the supernatural kind; J Sheridan Lefanu, M R James and Edith Wharton, E A Poe, Saki.

I loved Phantoms the book is really creepy although they massacred it as a movie.

I write horror and personally I find the mind to be the scariest place of all.

Pull my own chain, but I’m actually a horror writer, and my first book will be out in 2 months, published by Lightning Books, and will be available throughout America and Canada, called THE SOUL REAPERS- the human harvest has begun. By Glen Johnson (that’s me, lol)

It’s a horror story with a twist. Here’s the book synopsis:

Patrick Knight’s life turns chaotic when he starts receiving an unexpected series of reanimated visitors, each departing a fragment of a message. A tale unfolds, as old as time itself, relating humanities darkest untold secrets – the biblical story from the Devils point of view. Knight’s mind becomes unhinged, he repeatedly finds himself covered in blood. Suddenly he becomes a fugitive from the authorities, wanted in connection to multiple killings. But he doesn’t travel alone, death and destruction precedes him. Whole villages are eerily silent, corpses’ littering the streets, as a new plague from an unimaginable source starts to sweep the globe. At an old farmhouse Knight comes face to face with mankind’s worst nightmare. Buried in a field is the answer to all the riddles that climaxes in a terrifying twist.

Of course, I’m not sure if I should be using this site to give my book free publicity, but it’s just you were chatting about horror, scary books, and that’s how I make a living! Hope I haven’t stepped over the line? rolleyes.gif
