Dark_Grey Posted July 22, 2014 #8 Share Posted July 22, 2014 I try to not take life advice from books written in the Bronze Age, dark ages, etc. Real wisdom transcends time and place. Otherwise I completely agree - certain ideas about women, homosexuals, wearing two different types of cloth, blood sacrifices and creation stories tend to sound a little "dated" after a while...
Grandpa Greenman Posted July 22, 2014 #9 Share Posted July 22, 2014 Yearning For the Wind by Tom Cowan The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings The Holographic Universe by Michael Talbert. (The physics is off the mark, but it is a cool book.) Druid Mysteries by Phillip Carr-Gomm
redhen Posted July 22, 2014 #10 Share Posted July 22, 2014 but what about self empowerment.. wisdom ? and knowledge? If you are interested in studying philosophy, I recommend you start with logic and argumentation. You can find many Youtube videos explaining these tools. Then I would examine the field of epistemology, the study of knowledge; what is it and how do you get it? Then you can read up on anything you want whether it's philosophy or religion.
quiXilver Posted July 22, 2014 #11 Share Posted July 22, 2014 (edited) Tao Te Jing: Lao Tzu Chuang Tzu Tibetan Book of the Dead modern: Mantak Chia's series on Qi Gong and Energy Cultivation Emptiness Dancing and The End Of Your World, by Adyashanti (this is theory and philosophy from a more buddhist perspective) Energy Work by Robert Bruce as a purely practical exercise book, with little theory from a western perspective. Robert is an Australian. This one is especially good for folks who aren't as good with inner eye visualizations. He focuses on physical visualization. Exercises based on sensation, not imagination. hands down though: Daoist Internal Alchemy: Nei Gong and Wei Gong Training: Jerry Alan Johnson Jerry Alan Johnson's treatise on Daoist Internal Alchemy is the most complete book I've ever encountered on Daoist energy arts. He's the lineage holder and Senior Abbot (Zhuchi) of the Temple of the Celestial Cloud school of Daoist arts. But this one is very very advanced and pricey. This book will take me another twenty years and I still won't get through it all. A-ma-zing. Edited July 22, 2014 by quiXilver

+Link of Hyrule Posted July 22, 2014 #13 Share Posted July 22, 2014 Being that you are male by your account, I'd suggest "Disciplines of a Godly Man" by R. Kent Hughes. If you're female, there's the female version, "Disciplines of a Godly Woman", though being male I haven't actually gotten around to reading that particular book. Maybe one day if I want to try and learn how women think (based on experience, even the best book on earth might not be much use in that, however, but then I'm just another male, I guess).
