A waterway in eastern China has mysteriously turned a blood red color.

Residents in Zhejiang province said the river looked normal at 5 a.m. Beijing time on Thursday morning. Within an hour, the entire river turned crimson. Residents also said a strange smell wafted through the air.

“The really weird thing is that we have been able to catch fish because the water is normally so clear,” one local villager commented on China’s microblogging site Weibo.

I thought they dumped the coloring agent into the water as a warning to Pharaoh.

Why is it always China when something strange goes on?

“We suspect that somebody dumped artificial coloring in the water because he thought the typhoon yesterday would cause heavy rain, and nobody would notice [the color],” Jianfeng Xiao, Chief of the bureau told China News.

“It turned out there wasn’t heavy rainfall yesterday, so the evidence is left behind,” Xiao said.

Xiao said there is a paper manufacturer, a food coloring company and clothing-maker a long the river. The bureau is still investigating the incident.

They'll need a good detective to figure this one out.

Its usually due to alge blooms but there are also some bacteria that can turn low oxygen water red.

because they don't let namby-pamby things like anti-pollution legislation stand in the way of thrusting capitalism.

As this happened in China there is nothing realy mysterious as general environment protection is point #12.142 on their agenda.

Just remember in 2013 were approx 11.000 dead pigs were found in the Huangpu river near to Shanghai.

You are referring to the "Red Tide" phenomenon which as you say is quite common. This is due to huge blooms of dinoflagellates in the water giving the red colouration to the water. Normally associated with litoral areas, there are also 22 species that live in freshwater (no, I didn't know that, just interwebbed it :unsure2: ) which can give rise to the same phenomenon.

They need a decent forensics team - that batch of colourant in the water should technically be able to be discovered. I doubt they will bother though, just slap a few folk on the wrist and remind them that if they are going to dump to do so discretely is more likely along with a greased palm or two to seal the deal.
