RavenHawk Posted August 20, 2014 #27 Share Posted August 20, 2014 one of the most annoying arguments I read around the site is "Israel gave Gaza to the Palestinians" I don’t see that going around but I don’t know if it is annoying or just inaccurate. If I remember correctly, Egypt occupied Gaza after the Mandate was terminated. Then later, Egypt pulled out. They didn’t really give the land as they just left. That left Israel as the only authority in the region. Technically, Israel owns Gaza but by the same token, they never took ownership of it either, anticipating co-statehood with the Palestinian but that never came to fruition. At least not yet. No doubt that a few Palestinians do have legal deed to land but neither Egypt nor Israel had/have tried to evict the squatters. So it is Palestinian territory due to indifference. That is how the Palestinian has lived because of the indifference by the landowners. because all of this area is an Arabic/Palestinian land in the first place That is incorrect. It was Ottoman territory, then British, then Israeli. It was never Palestinian. There is a difference between owning the land and squatting on the land. The Palestinian migrated, mostly from Yemen and just settled on the land without permission. The absentee land owners didn’t object because the Fellahin worked their land. But as usual, these deals never last forever as the land owners were always making plans of how to use the land. Squatters usually get the boot. And that is what started to happen in the early 1900s. if a criminal invaded your apartment and killed many of your family then to show good intentions he gave you back one room to pile you and your family in it, will you accept this at all ? well this is how I feel about it And that is a bad analogy. But in this analogy, the Palestinian is the criminal. They believe that because they had occupied the land for perhaps centuries that the land should be theirs. The British were not impressed. If you didn’t have a legitimate deed from the Ottoman Empire, the land was not yours. And the vast majority of deeds held by Palestinians panned out to be bogus. And if you want to solely base land ownership on how long your tribe or clan has occupied the land, then that right would go to the Jews. and this lead us to another question which is if Israel was legal state then that mean Arabs have gave them this land and they thanked them with war and killing, And this is annoying. The Palestinians did not give the land to Israel. The Palestinian never owned it in the first place. If you want to use an analogy, this would be equivalent to a shady character that goes around selling bridges and buildings that they don’t own to unsuspecting victims. The war and killing was thrown at the Jews by the Arab League. The Palestinian had a chance in ’48 to share the land and they ran away because they were convinced that the Arab armies would be victorious. The Palestinian got greedy and lost. and if Israel took it by force then it's an illegal state, and why you blame them if they considers you enemies ? Taking land by force, especially in an act of defense is never illegal. This is the basis of human existence. This is another annoying misunderstanding. If you pick a fight and lose, why should the one you attacked give anything back? You see, the real world doesn’t work that way. You lose land, it is no longer yours. Neognosis Posted August 20, 2014 #28 Share Posted August 20, 2014 because all of this area is an Arabic/Palestinian land in the first place Yes. Except that they had no developed infrastructure, no central leadership, and no real development. At least that's my understanding. I'm willing to learn if I am wrong.
