Black mercury like puddle

I was doing my paper route when I was a teen and as I went up the steps, I could see what looked like a black shiny puddle about 3 inches wide as I approached it, it started to move. it then changed shape as it quickly moved into a small worm looking hole in the ground, I tried to dig to get to it so I could see what it was but it was too hard and between the cracks of a side walk.... just wondering if anyone else has seen something like this?

What steps?

How close did you get to it?

What were lighting conditions like?

What was the weather like?

How old were you?

Were you on any medications at the time?

You mean a hole that looks like a worm, or a hole that resembles a worm hole?

If you are 'up the steps', are you not on buildings material i.e concrete, stone or wood etc or still on a sidewalk?

What surface did you dig into?

Why did you dig?

What did you use to dig, are we to understand you attempted to dig into paving stones with your bare hands?
