You decide: Anyone wanting to buy a powerful vacuum cleaner has only 10 days left to be certain of getting one - following new EU rules that come in next month. From 1 September, companies in the EU will be banned from making or importing vacuum cleaners above 1600 watts. Hoover - based in South Wales - said that most of its cleaners were in that category. It has been replacing its models since July with less powerful versions, but a few are still left on the shelves. Does not bother me though, we do not use anything that powerful on our boat, my little hoover does it all in 10 minutes. We have one of those bagless ones, and even then I don't use it as much. I have two carpet sweepers, considering we have more oriental rugs to wall to wall carpets, and we're planning to rip those up to expose the hardwood underneath. I prefer using the carpet sweepers. It is inevitable, so the EU in it's wisdom allows only 65% of the catch to be made up of fish of various species. Rafterman Posted August 29, 2014 #19 Share Posted August 29, 2014 I'd be interested in seeing a comparison on energy usage of the now-banned vacuums vs the housefuls of vampire electronics that suck a constant supply of power 24/7. I can't imagine the power usage from vacuuming 20 minutes a week comes anywhere near the drain from these devices. Not to mention, as someone said above, folks will just have to vacuum longer. Its not only a case of not being able to purchase a vacuum cleaner 1600 or more within the EU but you are also banned from importing such a vacuum cleaner. Its a vacuum cleaner today what will it be tomorrow, and the day after.
