seeder Posted September 3, 2014 #1 Share Posted September 3, 2014 Ukraine agrees 'permanent truce' with rebels in east Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko says he has agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone on a "permanent ceasefire" with rebels. "Their conversation resulted in agreement on a permanent ceasefire in the Donbass region [the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk]," his office said. "They reached a mutual understanding on steps leading to peace." The announcement comes as US President Barack Obama meets Baltic leaders in Estonia ahead of a Nato summit. He is due to hold talks in the capital Tallinn with the presidents of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, all former Soviet states which joined Nato a decade ago. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-29042561

Space Commander Travis Posted September 3, 2014 #3 Share Posted September 3, 2014 From the New York Times: “Some of the Ukrainian soldiers appeared unwilling to fight. The commander of their unit, part of the Ninth Brigade from Vinnytsia, in western Ukraine, barked at the men to turn around, to no effect. “All right,” the commander said. “Anybody who refuses to fight, sit apart from the others.” Eleven men did, while the others returned to the city. Fortunately, it seems as if some of the army has more sense than the Hawks in Kiev and Washington, and really don't see much point in fighting their own neighbours merely to serve the strategic aims of the neoconservatives in Washington. bubblykiss Posted September 3, 2014 #4 Share Posted September 3, 2014 I sure am glad that Russia, who according to Putin never had troops in, ah, er...well....*that place*...is willing to go to peace with said place, in spite of not having troops or wars or battles or hostilities with them. This is kind of real peace with imaginary wars will surely.....wait....so did Putin admit to moving troops into the Ukraine and accidentally seizing the Crimean as well?
bubblykiss Posted September 3, 2014 #5 Share Posted September 3, 2014 "I have in my hand a piece of paper..." To be fair the conflict he was trying to advert looked like it would be as horrific as the first with a million dead per side of the major contenders....plus many-many-many more disfigured with shattered bodies and minds. Peace was preferable to graves and the specter of economic ruin fashioned by another hideous war.
George Ford Posted September 3, 2014 #6 Share Posted September 3, 2014 Well now Putin has agreed to this, it means that he is officially saying that any Russian found fighting within the Ukraine is not a Russian soldier under orders from Putin to fight in the Ukraine. So he is basically just enforcing what he has already said previous to this so called 'truce'. His words will only mean anything if he actively stops any Russian fighters entering the Ukraine and stops any further arming and equipping of existing rebels. I hope they all find genuine peace soon.
Sir Smoke aLot Posted September 3, 2014 #7 Share Posted September 3, 2014 Putin makes peace deals while Russia is not involved in this conflict at all, hmm. All this make me remember when milosevic ( ex-yugoslavia president after break up started ) was signing deals for peace in my country - while his country wasn't involved in war at all. Do politicians really believe that people are so dumb or they just use international laws to support their obvious lies? I guess its 2nd. If there is a law there is a flaw in it too.
stevewinn Posted September 3, 2014 #8 Share Posted September 3, 2014 the headline says Ukraine agrees permanent truce, a ceasefire reached. - all sounds good. But what is the Breaking News? the US is to lead a military exercise in Western Ukraine. it will be interesting to see how many NATO countries are involved and if they carry out the exercise under the NATO banner or stop short of that. So a peace plan as been agreed and the West send a few thousand troops into Russia's back garden. in response Russia will most probably send a large number of troops to the border and when they do people will be up in arms again and fail to see the reasons why. If the West continue with these tactics - continually saying (stupidly) they have ruled out military action in response to Russia. as witnessed by the EU's NEW foreign affairs chief. She's new in the job and as just walked into the room with the worlds best poker player (Russia) and put her cards on the table revealing her hand. It must now appeal to Russian planners that if the redline is crossed by the West Russia could push further into Ukraine right upto the natural boundary of the Dnipro river, effectively cutting the country in two. Kherson is the key Russia would need to capture it and form a land bridge. we could then see a face off. the west on one side of the river and the Russians on the other side.
