MidnightLady Posted November 16, 2014 #26 Share Posted November 16, 2014 i think he was a "kid" comparing to the crimes commited by other kings worldwide. There are also many stories and legends of his fairness in judgment, helping the poor, reducing taxes, taking from rich. The society back then was extremely corrupt and nobils in special were mingling always to back stab all the unfavorable rulings to their pockets. There were very harsh times and all the regions forming now Romania were separate kingdoms, some ruled by Vlad's siblings under the big threat of the Ottoman empire. kings were required to gain by all means including fear the mass trusteeship to be ready to fight and die for them and to achieve unification against the common enemy. Vlad Dracul was really in our nation one of the best strategic leaders of his time. He was also descending from Mircea cel Batran one of the fearless heroes in or Romanian nation, legendary for winning numerous wars against Ottomans with a report of often 1 man vs 20 turks. Thank you, that was a very informative post.
qxcontinuum Posted November 16, 2014 #27 Share Posted November 16, 2014 Again true, but violently executing men for whatever reason, still makes you sadistic and cruel. Even if you help the poor, reduce taxes, and unify a land; you're soul is pitch black if you purposefully torture, and murder people. But this is what everyone did in ancient , medieval times. Every bit of a ruler. Remember romans used to nail thieves hanging them by a cross until death by starvation. Arabs used to and still use to stone to death. can't even think about tortures and extreme paintful methods used by Catolic Church and Spanish inquisitors. Yes they were all awful and sadistic, this is how population was keept under control, by fear... Not just Vlad dracul did it... Everyone

The governments of the world are still doing this today. Look at the war crimes committed by the US, Russia, China, and even the UK. Perhaps instead of justifying the actions of our leaders, we should remove them. Most problems in the world are committed by people in power.
qxcontinuum Posted November 16, 2014 #29 Share Posted November 16, 2014 (edited) Yes they do, nothing has changed. They are still leading us through fear and power force surrounded by dogs in shiny blue armours. They still care of their pockets first and nothing cand held them responsible. Great manipulators of the true, hiding behind words and promises, nothing but cowards with big ego and gun power with tremendous inhibitions inflicting pain and prohibitions by their own taste. MidnightLady Posted November 17, 2014 #31 Share Posted November 17, 2014 I think the post here have been informative, insightful and educational. I suspect that we tend to gravitate to stories about Vlad and Elizabeth, because of Bram Stoker's tales of fantasy mixed with historical content. The spooky aspect of their lives saturated with the macabre is a dance we all enjoy, but at a safe distance. We would never do those things but taking a peek is very tantalizing. Monsters abound everywhere. Dangers in the night are all to real when we turn in for the night and cap off the day with the 11 o'clock news. We hope it can't touch us. That the world has changed and we are protected from a past that only exist in history books. Sadly this is not true, but we pretend it is. We do not want to send our children and grand-kids out to face a treacherous day filled with pedophiles are all assortment of evil predators. We do not want to tell them of these monsters for we wish them a carefree childhood where rainbows and sunshine are at their backs. But it's not true and like the little girl in Aliens learned the hard way... monsters do exist. To quote Crosby, Stills and Nash...Teach your children well. For in the end, it is our job to protect them.

What purpose is there if you help the world, but lose your soul in doing so? I think history tends to overly exaggerate life events, little stories are becoming legends especially when carried forth by Romanian peasants. Those of us from Romania know exactly what I am referring to when i say "ca la tara" :-) Historically the executions were real but not to that extend in my opinion. Teaching a lesson through public execution was very common procedure in medieval times everywhere else. While Vald Dracul's actions is associated to devil and dark history, my mind runs to the Crusades from Middle Eastern, Vatican and Spanish Inquisition who in the name of God and Christianity had completed some of the world hardest imaginable sadomasochistic genocides. ... heck even Guantanamo bay these days may equal Vlad's actions.
