How was one to pursue their hopeful dreams of wealth (without robbery, etc ) ? You might find a treasure ..... have to be lucky so no. Most treasure, was found in the earth ... or under it ; precious metals and or gemstones etc . To get to that wealth and realm (its dangerous down there, shaft collapse, toxic gasses, heat, etc ) like going out on the sea, or up to the mountains, one had to appease the beings of that realm . Miners still do it today in some places and leave offerings ! So, eventually a quantum leap was made in the reasoning ; if I offer something to 'Lord of the Underground ', I get something back . If you have nothing to offer, you offer yourself. . . . on a 'time payment plan' contract . Personally ? I prefer to play $10 worth of lotto once a month . In exchange for when I win ....
