Nearly Half of Britons Unaware of Auschwitz

LONDON (Reuters) - Nearly half of Britons in a poll said they had never heard of Auschwitz, the Nazi death camp in southern Poland that became a symbol of the Holocaust and the attempted genocide of the Jews.

The results of the survey conducted by the BBC were released on Thursday as Britain's public broadcaster announced it will show a new series next January to mark the 60th anniversary of the concentration camp's liberation.

"We were amazed by the results of our audience research," said Laurence Rees, a producer on the series, "Auschwitz: The Nazis & the 'Final Solution."'

"It's easy to presume that the horrors of Auschwitz are engrained in the nation's collective memory, but obviously this is not the case," Rees said.

Aren't you one of the people who thinks the BBC is full of crap? huh.gif

Anyway, I doubt that very much....half of all Britons my ass...who the hell did they ask? blink.gif The ned population? 4000 out of 60 million is hardly conclusive tongue.gif

This is like the 1998 survey that claimed 60% of Britains didn't know who Hitler was...which was equally ridiculous.

Yep.

However people are generally ignorant of history, so it really would not suprise me if this is true.

How could half of the people, in Britain no less, not know of the Auschwitz!!?

What does this say about the educational system? Is it that we are not teaching our children proper history?

I remember when i was in school in England, some 10-12 years ago, in Humanities class we were strictly not allowed to mention Nazis or Swastikas or anything like that. Can you believe it? I was appalled and i feel fortunate to learn later on my history.

I think there needs to be abit of a revision in the ciriculum if that many people don't know about something as significant as Auschwitz.

The poll was supposedly only taken from people ages 16 to...um...can't be bothered clicking the link again. 35 I think it was...

I think it's BS though...unless half of the people they polled were neds or something. Certainly, I don't know anyone stupid enough not to know about Auschwitz. An example of a poll that didn't take a large enough sample I think...

I agree with Shady. This is utter rot.

4000 out of 60 million surveyed between the age of 16 to 35 is nowhere near conclusive and yes they must have been Neds not to know this.

The BBC as usual are twisting the truth.

Perhaps they could plan a field trip to one of the camps. That way ages 16-35 could see it first hand like I did.

Once you see it, you won't ever forget.

Dear God, the whole experience was so disturbing.

I cried a lot the day I went to Dachau.

Being American I am unfamilier with the reputation of the BBC. But I would find it very hard to believe that any semi educated individual on earth has never heard of Auschwitz, Hitler's final solution, or the Holocaust. Some idiots may live in denial of the events but they at least show a knowledge of the history.

the BBC is usually great (dont listen to erikl) however it seems to be falling into this trend of taking these meaningless straw polls of say for instace 4000 people and delibiratley targetting an group of people be it in this case young females or people who may look like they are from a poorer background in order to shock the public.

Its just a lot of b******s.

I cant beleieve that even a quarter of the british publich dont know what happened in poland.

In scotland alone the cirriculum for primary school history ie: 5 year olds onwards focusses majorly on ww2 as it was the most defining chapter of the 20th century.

Again the poll is utter nonenesnse.

Wun not you too...

It's funny how people attack me when I bring proof that the BBC is un-balanced, un-proffesional organization (a fact known to many on the internet), calling me a paranoid etc. etc. (a word very favoured here by people who don't have real argument, as I've seen so far), but when they don't agree with the BBC, then the report is bullsh*t etc. rolleyes.gif

Double standards anyone? whistling2.giftongue.gif

wun, I have not seen much of the BBC as i have only spent about 2 months in the UK, and erikl is not all that paranoid. a lot of the polls and stuff i have seen on the BBC and on the ABC are just ridiculous. they base so much on a minority that it is ridiculous.

btw, I actually think this report is another example of BBC's un-proffesional reporting.

It is very unlikely that 50% of the Britons don't know what Auschwitz

is...

16 years old yungsters maybe... but in the ages of 35? blink.gif

That's absurd!

If they said any other death camp, like treblinka and majdanek, then I might believe it (those are not very famous camps to none eastern-Europeans or Jews), but Auschwitz?

Not likely....

Well take it from someones who has watched the BBC all their life to tell you that it is very good.

No erikl like i have said to you a million times, yes there might have been a biased report towards the palestinians now and again from particular reporters but there are just as many biased reports in favour of isreal.

I watch it every day.

The difference is erikl that whilst i disagreed with the way in which they came to the conclusion of the above report i still recognise that 95% of the time its reporting is excellent.

Its a massive coropration erikl its bound to make mistakes.

Oh unlike isreali media , but i forgot isreal never seems to do anything wrong in your opinion.

On the contrary wun, Israel do a lot of mistakes (you wouldn't believe how much), but when I came here I saw how people bash Israel (Talon was in the climax of spreading that Israel genocides the Palestinians), that if I had brought more bad things about Israel (with the lies spread here back then), I would have felt like I'm collaborating with that mass anti-Israeli propaganda.

But when you come to think about it, I haven't seen you or Talon writting anything bad about Scotalnd either whistling2.gif...

If you want to see and ear bad things about Israel, just watch some of youre TV.

As they do that so much, I see the only job I have is to try and give people another side, a positive side, about my country.

Where could i start.

I am forever writing about the terrible state of the scottish public's health.

And im forever decrying the state of the british immigration problems what else do u want me to say.

I am constantly attakcing the war on terror.

Comne on erikl we arent the same on that note.

OK, wun, so here's some bad things in my opinion about my country:

I hate the recent corruption which spreaded in our rulling government.

I think Sharon's plan is a stupid one, which only gives Hamas a back wind.

I'm against the economic reforms done by Netanyahu, our Treasury Minister, because it is ultra-capitalist, very Tacherist reforms (and go against all the ideals of the Likud party, btw. In Israel, the left is associated with the rich elites, while the right wing is associated with the weak society and is more socialist... I know it sounds strange, but that's Israeli politics rolleyes.gif).

I also hate the fact that the religious parties are now going to enter the coalition because the secularist Shinui (which won 15 mandates out of 120 last elections, becomming the third largest party in the Israeli parliament) only cares for winning seats in the parliament and has done almost nothing from what it promised), and now the Orthodox Shas party will steal our money again disgust.gif....

So here are some of my complaints about my country.

Satisfied? rolleyes.gif

How can you justify a statement like this when you have spent so little time over here? You have admitted you hardly watched the BBC. Are you talking about the BBC News or the BBC in general?? Polls and 'stuff' what is stuff?
