Dark_Grey Posted November 20, 2015 #1 Share Posted November 20, 2015 (edited) Link posted in another thread, but I think this deserves it's own as it effects all of us. If you recognize the two ladies below, you'll understand why this is even more cause for concern.. The UN Wants To Censor The Entire Internet To Save Feminists’ Feelings http://www.breitbart...web-censorship/ "In a report released yesterday, entitled “Cyber Violence Against Women And Girls: A Global Wake-up Call,” UN Women, the group behind last year’s risible “He for She” campaign, called on governments to use their “licensing prerogative” to ensure that “telecoms and search engines” are only “allowed to connect with the public” if they “supervise content and its dissemination.” In other words, if search engines and ISPs don’t comply with a list of the UN’s censorship demands, the UN wants national governments to cut off their access to the public." My personal favorite part: "The message from the UN seems to be: “cyber-violence” against women, at least according to their invited guests, is somehow equivalent to getting thumped, or bullied, or abused in real life, and it’s worth clamping down on basic free speech provisions to insulate these delicate first-world feminist wallflowers from the consequences of their own purposefully provocative statements. The UN ignores the fact that both of their high-profile invitees are professional wind-up merchants who have capitalized on a media environment in which it has become acceptable to say almost anything about “straight white males” and which women, no matter how preposterous their opinions, can get column inches for saying they’ve been “threatened.” (No journalist will ever check their claims.)" If you'd rather not generate more ad revenue for Breitbart, there are plenty of other sources. It's all out there for now Edited November 20, 2015 by Dark_Grey
bubblykiss Posted November 20, 2015 #2 Share Posted November 20, 2015 Nothing says progress and forward thinking like preventing people from doing those things. Not gonna lie, these problems were invisible to me because I neither engage in them nor do I actively seek them out. And if people don't want their feelings hurt then they should do the same.

Frank Merton Posted November 21, 2015 #9 Share Posted November 21, 2015 Control of the press, not so much through censorship as through ownership, is how Putin stays "popular" in Russia (although of course don't ever believe Russian polls. I think much the same applies to much of the western press, but fortunately the ownership is in the hands of people with a wide variety of views. China and Vietnam and Iran and no doubt some others try to censor the internet via national firewalls, with limited success, since technical ways around them are widely understood (albeit illegal). Their main targets seem to be certain religions, anti-Communist propaganda, and of course anything even remotely sexual (there is no prude like a Communist prude). It is clear that freedom of the press necessarily must be limited everywhere. People cannot be allowed to slander others, nor spread incitements to violence, nor spread instructions on how to commit criminal acts. I would add that any kind of Nazi propaganda should be banned considering the millions who died at their hands. (As is the case with Pol Pot stuff in Cambodia). Obviously in each of the above cases, disputes of fact will arise, and I would be inclined to say spreading known falsehoods could be put in that taboo list, although no one seems prone to try except Singapore. EEHC Posted November 22, 2015 #14 Share Posted November 22, 2015 (edited) We don't need more censorship. As someone else mentioned, you can already block people on Facebook and Twitter, hide your profile and refuse friendship. This should take care of most of the 'Online-Violence'. In the most extreme cases, a person can call the police and report a crime. Edited November 22, 2015 by Sam.

RoofGardener Posted November 22, 2015 #16 Share Posted November 22, 2015 As many members have already pointed out: stalking and targetted offensive messages only work on social media sites, most of which have internal controls anyway . You can simply block the unwanted/offensive member. If said member acquirse your email address.. well... that usually means you have unwisely given it away. So change your email address. As for a national police system to monitor and punish social media sites that lack suitable controls, that would be a MASSIVE undertaking. People have to take personal control of their actions on the internet, not expect a 'nanny' state to hold their hands. If someone is knocked down and killed for walking on a railway line, do you ban railways ? Methinks the UN Womens group doesn't understand how the internet works. And as an ironic illustration of that proposal, I note that the link to their online report doesn't work. (though in fairness it is possible that the server is simply overloaded with people trying to access the report).

Farmer77 Posted July 26, 2016 #21 Share Posted July 26, 2016 Its only a matter of time before the internet gets locked down. Ive been cringing every time i hear the media mention how the Mcdonalds shooter studied mass shootings online, eventually the free flow if ideas and information will become forbidden in a society which places comfort and safety above all else. GlitterRose Posted July 26, 2016 #23 Share Posted July 26, 2016 I think you have to look at the actual report to see what they're talking about. They're not talking about saying "you suck." They're talking about using the internet to stalk someone and make threats of actual physical violence. Somehow...unbeknownst to me...some people are actually able to figure out where people they don't like live, and they come after them (or at least threaten to). It's not legal under other situations to threaten someone's life. Why should it be legal on the internet? I'm guessing the cyber harassment bit could also be about doxing people. (Sharing their info online so folks who hate them can show up at their house or their place of work). It could also involve posting their nude pics to revenge porn sites. I think that is stuff that should be addressed.
GlitterRose Posted July 26, 2016 #24 Share Posted July 26, 2016 Honestly, I don't think this is *only* a women's issue. It may be that more women are actually stalked, and maybe more of their pics end up on revenge porn sites...but anyone can be threatened with violence. GlitterRose Posted July 26, 2016 #25 Share Posted July 26, 2016 (edited) Incidentally, I was threatened in an online forum once by someone from the Order of Nine Angles, for disagreeing with his ideology. I didn't really take it seriously, but I certainly would have if he doxed me and/or him and his buddies started showing up at my home or work.
