UM-Bot Posted May 9, 2016 #1 Share Posted May 9, 2016 The space agency will be revealing the latest findings of its Kepler Space Telescope tomorrow afternoon. The intriguing announcement, which is set for 1pm EDT / 6pm GMT on Tuesday ( May 10th ), remains under wraps for the time being however there has been speculation that astronomers may have discovered a significant new planet in orbit around a star in a nearby solar system. Jacques Terreur Posted May 9, 2016 #2 Share Posted May 9, 2016 given that even Kepler's discovery of Exoplanets on a regular basis doesn't seem that news-worthy anymore nowadays, i'm a bit excited what this is about!

Waspie_Dwarf Posted May 9, 2016 #5 Share Posted May 9, 2016 given that even Kepler's discovery of Exoplanets on a regular basis doesn't seem that news-worthy anymore nowadays, i'm a bit excited what this is about! And therein lies the problem. NASA regularly have news conferences like this, but most of the time they go unnoticed. They announce them in advance so that the specialist journalists will attend. Every now and then the press picks up on one and imply that something amazing is going to be announced. When the announcement is made it is generally something of major scientific interest but not something that the general public considers amazing. Then the criticism of NASA begins over something they never claimed anyway. Somebody's going to say they've discovered ET. Just you wait. I suspect that you are right, but it almost certainly won"t be the NASA scientists tomorrow.

crandles57 Posted May 9, 2016 #11 Share Posted May 9, 2016 There was this http://arstechnica.co.uk/science/2015/10/something-were-not-sure-what-is-radically-dimming-a-stars-light/ That was Kepler telescope. 15-22% ie huge dips in a star's brightness in 2011 and 2013. "we might find out in January" seems radio related not Kepler, still ... Might another big dip and/or a possible explanation be possible subject of announcement? Probably something completely different.

switchopens Posted May 10, 2016 #13 Share Posted May 10, 2016 Some of you regular people should get used to the fact that when NASA has "a big announcement", they are serving up a big bag of disappointment. The people that will pop the champagne will be hardcore nerds and enthusiasts that know that these little "insignificant" tidbits are actually great strides in the field of astronomy. I'm sure the mainstream media is loosing interest since they have all been waiting for the big moment where we finally have some proof of life on another planet. Sooner or later, most of them will just stop showing up leaving a ton of empty seats for Scientific America, Discovery and PBS.
Waspie_Dwarf Posted May 10, 2016 #14 Share Posted May 10, 2016 (edited) These "disappointments" and "insignificant tidbits" are only disappointments" and "insignificant tidbits" to those unable to grasp how science really works and would prefer to wallow in fantasy and ignorance. Science is about discovering reality piece by piece. Like a jigsaw each new piece allows a better view of the overall picture. Quite frankly reality doesn't care one iota for what you might think is worthwhile or exciting, it just is what it is. No, that is not what this conference will be about. NASA are specifically stating that this is a media conference about new discoveries.

Waspie_Dwarf Posted May 10, 2016 #20 Share Posted May 10, 2016 Another Earth 2 I suppose which we will reach in 100 000 years or something What are you expecting? NASA to magically invent warp drive? Scientists are not so limited in their imagination as you seem to be. They are brilliant at devising ways to examine extremely distant worlds without the need to actually go there. Fortunately there are plenty of people, with a grasp of scientific reality who will appreciate whatever discovery NASA has made. A genuine Earth like planet would be a real scientific find. It would help determine how common planets like ours are and thus how likely life is in the galaxy. Of course these newest discoveries may have nothing to do with an Earth like planet at all.

eddword Posted May 10, 2016 #25 Share Posted May 10, 2016 Kepler telescope discovers over 100 Earth-sized planets. Like this is an unsolved Mystery... Of course there are other earth size planets out there that could sustain life as we know it... To think otherwise would be presumptuous and ignorant. They are just now confirming what has always been a scientific fact.
