A documentary on the goggle box said a couple of months ago that humans are pretty close to the limit of evolution because of computers and software. Soon we won't need to think for ourselves.

I personally believe we will still evolve as technological evolution and human evolution go hand in hand. The more you learn about a product the better the product gets. In turn the product will evolve and so will your understanding of it. The product gets more complicated and so your understanding grows as well which broadens your thinking.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/history_of_the_earth

3.8b years of life on earth as simple bacteria. It wasn't until 570m years ago that any real animals would develop. Fish were first at 530m years ago. Land plants appeared 475m years ago.

The oldest fossil of a land animal yet discovered is this http://eol.org/pages/4327507/overview dated at 428m years ago. Mammals appeared 200m years ago, the only animal classification to contain advanced intelligent life on Earth (humans). We appeared less than a million years ago. I made a size comparison with symbols as a visual reference. The likelihood of finding life is very limited then within that small number of planets that we find that harbor the conditions necessary for life to form you got to consider that the chances of any of that life being intelligent is even smaller to a multiple power.

You could use Earth as an example of what the proportion of plant and animal life is against intelligent life to find an estimate of how many life supporting planets would contain intelligent life.
