99-Million-Year-Old Bird Wings Found Encased in Amber

Quote

Finding ancient bugs trapped in amber is a relatively common occurrence, but the recent discovery of two ancient bird wings fossilized in Burmese amber is unprecedented. These 3D fossils—which still contain feather arrangements and traces of soft tissue—are simply amazing.

99-million-year? How they can be so sure? Why not 100 or 98-million-year old?

For God's sake man! Because they're date-stamped, that's why!

I cannot find the underlying paper from Dr Xing Lida that covers this but I would suspect the date comes from the age of the rocks in which the amber was found.....it probably needs a 'circa' added to that date.

Tres cool. Wish there was a banana for a size comparison.

The feathers do not look ready for flight. Maybe those feathers were more for sexual displays, then developed into flight...Males trying to get higher perches/mating calls heard farther?

Edit:

Doh, read article first, then post.

Article says fully developed and very similar to modern. So, ready for flight. It also says these may be young birds, explaining why they couldn't get loose.
