Who will show up? Who will pay?

Dozens of well-known Republicans aren’t showing up. There’s no word yet on who will speak. A growing number of corporate sponsors are taking a pass. Groups of white supremacists and other agitators are on the way, while the official protest routes are frantically being redrawn after being thrown out in court. And then there’s the fight to dethrone the big star.

With less than three weeks to go, Donald Trump’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland is poised to be the most chaotic GOP gathering of the modern era.

The candidate, his family and close supporters are expected to play starring roles. So will most top congressional leaders. But many Republicans who want to distance themselves from Trump’s incendiary rhetoric are refusing to attend. Past corporate sponsors such as Ford, General Electric and JPMorgan Chase have declined to participate again.

The Republican party seems more divided than Great Britain....

A lot of people in both scenarios didn't get what they wanted, so now the entire process becomes suspect.

I think the fracturing of the political parties is a precursor to changing this system. The electoral system is clearly broken, evident more in this election than ever before. Hopefully this opens the doors for proper 3rd party representation in the future as the Repubs struggle to define themselves

Agree.  I don't think Trump is the answer, but I think the chaos it has created may ultimately be what helps us.

There is a serious potential downside though, if the Republican Party fractures into smaller parties then the Democrats will effectively be unopposed.  Our two party system doesn't work so well in the absence an effective second party.

And that is what is the worst about the situation. If you don't have an effective opposition you don't have a democracy. But if a party starts chasing after every radical they can find you should not be surprised if it gets radicalized, and radicalized organizations tend to spin itself into pieces.

We need loads more people who claim to want a change to actually show support to a third party.  It's not throwing your vote away to side with a team that may not win.  It could be the snowflake that starts the avalanche.
