Speak with the pen and not with the sword

I have always thought these words were very wise. Speak with the pen and not with the sword.

For the sword can be bent or destroyed. But the wise words written with thy pen, will last throughout the ages.

Indeed they are wise words - I am more familiar with this quote tho -

"The Pen is mightier than the Sword" (as in military power etc..) and is far more effective than using violence or force.

Hmm! maybe in a perfect world ?......mind you....if all they used were pens in Game of Thrones - I probably wouldn't watch it :-*

Isn't that House of Cards?

Along slightly similar lines, I do love this quote from the infamous Al Capone:

Quote

You can get more of what you want with a kind word and a gun, than you can with just a kind word.

Not that I condone the methods of Al Capone.

I wouldn't know - I haven't followed the series. I believe it's good though.

Force is necessary at times, as the pen can't defend property, sovereignty, and life.

A better world would be one where force wouldn't ever be necessary, but no place or time will ever be that perfect.

Well said Thor - that is very philosophical.

I agree and I keep a sword and powerful magic to unleash if needed.

But I control myself and have reached more goals with my pen. But yes always keep the sword on hand.

It's there just in case. But it's not what I use to speak with most of the time.

LS - do you mind if I ask you - what do you mean by 'powerful magic to unleash if needed' ?

I have noticed that you use the word 'magic' / and or 'magical' in your posts often. :)

Magic as in magical energy. Yet words have power and can be magical also. :)

WIzards take a -4 penalty to wielding melee weapons. You should cross-class into Fighter if you plan on waving a sword around.

Gandalf uses a sword quite well.  The wizard in my current game can't stand up to a stiff breeze.

So, keep the swords with the fighters, keep the wands with the wizards.  And, personally, I'll take the boomstick.
