Department of Energy and Climate Change

The DECC is the latest casualty of Theresa May's new government. I have a horrible feeling this may be the worst casualty of the whole Brexit fallout.

Wasn't sure if this fit better with Environment or UK news so please move if necessary.

When Russia, India, China and other major polluters begin to accept the costs of this problem then and only then should western governments do so.  The idea that a global problem should be paid for by a small handful of countries at the expense of their economic growth is ridiculous yet this is exactly what the climate crowd are demanding.  They need to go suck on a smokestack.

So the more developed economies shouldn't do anything until the less developed do? Yeah, that'll work. Are you familiar with the concept of setting an example?

Theres a difference between a nation choosing to be environmentally responsible for itself and its citizens and committing economic suicide by agreeing to international agreements which include arbitrary measuring sticks which the rest of the world doesnt have to live up to.

China has made great strides in cleaning up its air pollution:  what do you think the Three Gorges Dam was, a bathtub?  Thanks in large measure to hydroelectricity from that dam China has sharply reduced its foreign oil purchases and sent the world petroleum market into a tailspin.  Your low gas prices are one of the results.  That China is still a major polluter has more to do with how bad things were when it started cleaning them up.

India and Russia are coming along slowly.  Conversion takes money and they can barely even feed their populations.  The fall of communism meant that elderly folks who had a government pension lost it.  The old babushkas are forced to beg for food and water.  For the time being, there isn't much we can effectively do to help them.  But once our own cheap energy comes online, they'll see the light and go along.  What we can do then is lend them the money to do it faster.

No matter what economic system you live under, communist, socialist, capitalist, your first priority is to feed your people - well, maybe not under capitalism.  Only after the necessities are taken care of can you afford the luxuries and sad to say - clean air is a luxury.

As for sucking on a smokestack:  I grew up next to four belching smokestacks of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company (CEI).  I'm really fed up with sucking on smokestacks. Coal smoke kills somewhere in the neighborhood of 30,000 people annually.  The world doesn't need any more smokestacks to suck on.  Theirs, or ours.

Back to the subject of the thread:  the Brits have shown an uncanny ability to bungle their energy projects.  This fits right in.
