In the great houses of Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, having an extra toe was one way to garner a lot of respect.

A unique prehistoric Pueblo culture thrived in the high desert of Chaco Canyon about a thousand years ago. Scientists have known about polydactyly among these people for years, based on images and skeletal remains showing extremities with extra fingers and toes. But past research revealed only hints about its importance to the ancient culture.

Ealdwita snippet alert..............

Anne Boleyn had an extra finger, at least that was according to a rather nasty piece of work, Nicholas Sander...a Catholic propagandist writing some 30 years after Anne's death. He notes that the young queen “…had a projecting tooth under the upper lip, and on her right hand, six fingers.” He also claims the she had an unsightly cyst on her neck, which she tried to hide by wearing dresses and jewelry that covered her throat.

Didn't realize ol' Henry was that short-sighted!....especially as he made such a fuss about poor Anne of Cleves!
