jethrofloyd Posted July 27, 2016 #1 Share Posted July 27, 2016 Mysterious Purple Orb Spotted On Ocean Floor http://news.sky.com/story/mysterious-purple-orb-spotted-on-ocean-floor-10514094 The colourful orb was seen near the Channel Islands of California by the Exploration Vessel Nautilus, a scientific expedition equipped with a live broadcasting studio. The apparently otherwordly lifeform was spotted in a rocky crevasse by a remote-controlled rover, and scientists scratched their heads for several minutes during the live broadcast, trying to explain what viewers could see.
Claire. Posted July 27, 2016 #2 Share Posted July 27, 2016 Several years to determine whether or not it's a new organism? Someone needs funding obviously. Cute little thing though.
+OverSword Posted July 27, 2016 #3 Share Posted July 27, 2016 I love listening to oceanographers talk on these videos. Seems like a fun job. Well, that part anyway.

SHaYap Posted July 28, 2016 #5 Share Posted July 28, 2016 Should've let the red crab have a go at it first ... could've learned something from the natural interaction between the locals ~
BeastieRunner Posted July 28, 2016 #6 Share Posted July 28, 2016 2 years from now they overpopulate the surface of the Earth and we find out they're the distant cousins of a furry little creature from Iota Geminorum IV.
pallidin Posted July 28, 2016 #7 Share Posted July 28, 2016 Wow. Great video! Love how the crab was thinking about "capturing" it to possibly eat prior to the laser telemetry, which seemed to scare the crab. Of course, the underwater remote vehicle itself I'm sure scared the crab as well.
paperdyer Posted July 28, 2016 #8 Share Posted July 28, 2016 Don't feed it. It might be a sea-tribble!
pallidin Posted July 28, 2016 #9 Share Posted July 28, 2016 From the looks of it, internally on the vid, my vote is that it is an egg sack of some type of currently unknown species type. It doesn't look like a specific mature marine animal, rather an egg sack. It's location (underneath a ledge) seems consistent with egg sack placement. My unknowlegable guess is that it is an egg sack for some type of jellyfish.

Their update is that they think it's a sea slug or relative.
+DieChecker Posted July 29, 2016 #11 Share Posted July 29, 2016 My guess would be a communal animal, like a siphonophore.
