Still Waters Posted July 28, 2016 #1 Share Posted July 28, 2016 A seven-year-old girl has died after being hit by a stone thrown by an elephant from its enclosure at Rabat Zoo in Morocco. The stone got past the elephant's fence and a ditch separating the animal and visitors, the zoo said in a statement. The girl was taken to hospital and died within a few hours, the zoo added. The zoo statement said the enclosure met international standards and said "this kind of accident is rare, unpredictable and unusual". http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-36914884

SHaYap Posted July 28, 2016 #3 Share Posted July 28, 2016 Probably some idiot tossed that stone into the enclosure first ... volunteers at Zoos all over the world have found all sorts of things that people throws at the animals ~ sorry for the kid, but the pachyderm isn't the villain here ~
Claire. Posted July 28, 2016 #4 Share Posted July 28, 2016 So tragic. A lesson for all parents as animals can be so unpredictable especially when they are frightened or feel threatened in any way.
SHaYap Posted July 28, 2016 #5 Share Posted July 28, 2016 the elephant probably thought it was 'fun' tossing the stone at the people, like I mentioned earlier, it is highly probable that the elephant picked up the habit from people throwing things at them, mostly yummy junk food, other times not so much but that's not the point ... throwing stones is the furthest thing an angry elephant would ever think of doing ~
GlitterRose Posted July 28, 2016 #6 Share Posted July 28, 2016 (edited) Nature will friggin' kill ya. People might think that building walls around it means it can't. That is incorrect. I'm very sad for the parents, and also for the elephant. It should be roaming free. Edited July 28, 2016 by ChaosRose

From the article: Phyllis Lee, Scientific Director of the Amboseli Trust for Elephants, says that targeted throwing of stones and branches by elephants is very unusual. "It can happen when elephants are frustrated or bored. In my opinion, it's unlikely the elephant was directly targeting the girl - but exhibiting frustration. You can't predict what animals in captivity will do."
ailill Posted July 28, 2016 #8 Share Posted July 28, 2016 Elephants are extremely social animals, and though Im not someone that hates zoos nor do i know anything about this zoo, but actions like these were most likely formed from emotional stress and anger of being separated from family or being alone. I don't see any elephants in the wild killing people with stones.
