Still Waters Posted August 6, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 6, 2016 Researchers have just identified what might just be the most surreal thing to emerge from the ice: the remnants of a covert U.S. Army base teeming with radioactive waste, abandoned decades ago in northwestern Greenland. A lot of messy stuff threatens to be exposed as the ice disappears, including some 200,000 litres of diesel fuel, 240,000 litres of sewage and waste water, some toxic polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)—and an unknown amount of radioactive coolant, left over from the site’s nuclear generator, according to a new study, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. Camp Century was built in 1959, at the height of the Cold War, beneath the surface of the northwestern Greenland ice sheet. There, the US studied deployment of nuclear missiles against Russia. http://canadajournal.net/science/melting-ice-will-expose-toxic-base-says-new-research-50722-2016/

Back in WWII times burying was the way to dispose of stuff.

jmccr8 Posted October 1, 2016 #8 Share Posted October 1, 2016 After the 2nd world war the military near my home town put unused out dated ammunition on the ice on middle of lakes in in the springtime just before the thaw so that they would fall into the water to dispose of excess inventory. as a side note Canada produced enough ammunition to kill every man woman and child 3 times during that war, good thing nobody could shoot straight and make every shot count. jmccr8
