Obama shortens prison sentences of 111 convicts.

U.S. President Barack Obama shortened the prison sentences of 111 convicts serving time for drug-related offenses in his second round of clemency grants this month, the White House said on Tuesday. Obama has now granted a total of 673 commutations during his presidency, more than the number granted by the 10 previous presidents combined, as he seeks to reform the criminal justice system, it said.

Here's a Time article with more details: http://time.com/4473073/president-obama-shorten-prison-sentences-commute/

The majority of the 111 individuals whose sentences were shortened on Tuesday had been

imprisoned for drug trafficking offenses, including crack-cocaine and methamphetamine. Thirty five of the individuals who were granted clemency on Tuesday had been sentenced to life in prison for drug crimes. Many of the prisoners will be released by Dec. 28, not long before the president is set to leave office. Some will stay behind bars until 2018.

Apparently the early releases apply to mostly non-violent drug offenders (which means some were violent, as in one of the examples in the news article) who would have received a lesser sentence had the same crime been committed today. I need to double check this, but I believe these early releases stem from the Justice Department's drug offenders initiative. I'm not sure how white collar and other non-violent criminals are impacted or included) if at all. Anyway, it's estimated that Obama may add another 700 to the list. I personally am all for giving people a second chance but on the face of it, a few of the people seem to more than deserve their original sentences.

Legalize it, you prick. You've been POTUS for 8 years and nothing has come of it. The states that tried to exercise their sovereign rights over drugs had mom and pop weed dispensaries raided by Obama's Federal Govt. Stop *****-footing around with these weak pardons and do something good for once. Man it's been a day.
