NASA to Announce 'Surprising' Europa Discovery

NASA will announce new findings about Jupiter's ocean-harboring moon Europa during a news conference at 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT) on Monday (Sept. 26). "Astronomers will present results from a unique Europa observing campaign that resulted in surprising evidence of activity that may be related to the presence of a subsurface ocean on Europa," NASA officials wrote in a media advisory Tuesday (Sept. 20).

They'll announce the discovery of a giant, black obelisk on the surface of Europa.

I'm hoping obelisk, but will settle for ocean. :tsu:

gonna be same bs announcements about stupid findings that we need to hear, if they did find et you think nasa would tell us, not even our governments will! gonna be we found "water" or vapour....who cares not like we are gonna be able to go there anytime soon, only one capable and a dream is spacex founder, nasa and gov dont give a damn unless one of those planets can make money or weapons. maybe instead of wasting money on war and religions we spend on space advancements

So NASA and JPL create spacecraft like the Hubble, Cassini, Curiosity and the James Webb to make money or create weapons?   How does that work?   Plus, NASA is incredibly open with their data making it public almost as quickly as they download and process it so not sure what you think they are hiding, care to explain?

HAHAH Nasa makes public announcements 24 hrs later after they find something...why do you think that is? cover up, photoshop stuff, they aint open, they are open what the gov says they can! and nasa has designed stuff for the military over the years, in return budget funding, yes nasa made awesome stuff to view planets but for what so maybe when the world can decide that as of right now we only have ONE EARTH to live on and forget war and religion stopping us from exploring more planets, we need to fund spacex so maybe within our generation we fill put a footstep on another planet.

What a bizarrely stupid statement to make.  If you were worth my time or had the ability to understand I'd explain to you why they announce these discoveries in advance but you aren't so I won't.

Just what does NASA have to do with ISIS the various wars going on around the world?

Arthur C. Clarke would be pleased if he was still alive.  It's amazing how close he theorized in his books to what we are finding now.  I know he was much more fiction than fact, but just to get the "players" right was a major win IMHO..

As far as the Spoiler alert goes - Yes any life will be Alien as "It's not of this Earth".  Great title for a movie.  Wait Roger Corman already used it, twice!.

You are miserably uninformed.

NASA has confirmed, it's NOT aliens. Not that we realistically expected such a find.

NASA: Activity Spied on Europa, But It's 'NOT Aliens'

On Monday, NASA will host a teleconference "to present new findings from images captured by the agency's Hubble Space Telescope of Jupiter's icy moon, Europa." If, like me, you were hopeful that this announcement might include hints of an extraterrestrial flavor, the space agency was keen to quickly nip any alien-related rumors in the bud:

Monday, we'll announce new findings from Jupiter’s moon Europa. Spoiler alert: NOT aliens: https://t.co/3IHT9H9Idp pic.twitter.com/11lHwsDzvv

Bummer.

Of course, any revelations about Europa's hypothetical alien inhabitants probably wouldn't have been a possibility; this is a Hubble-related astronomical discovery and we don't currently have a mission close enough to the enigmatic moon to seek out direct evidence for extraterrestrial life. But as noted in the NASA press release, the announcement is related to the "presence of a subsurface ocean on Europa," which is the key factor behind the moon's habitable potential.

on the other hand i'll be curious to find out more about who is reaching to Nasa before of the day where discoveries are announced....

See the thing with announcements of scientific discovery is that they involve scientists announcing what they have ACTUALLY  discovered... not what some random person on an internet forum wants them to discover.

Well, if they have confirmed the elusive water plumes, that would probably mean volcanic activity beneath the surface, and an increased possibility of the existence of life.

It wouldn't necessarily mean volcanism, what it would mean is that there must be cracks in the ice, which means that there are places where the ice crust is relatively thin. That is significant because it means it would be easier to place a probe into the sub-surface ocean.

Well said and I agree 100% .  The best thing is it will only get better, very much better, in the next decade, which I think I can weather for sure.  Can't wait.
