Unusual feature near Paviland Cave

Could it be that the feature you describe is the remnant of an underground streamway as water flows through such a soft point onto another bedding plane?.

My speleological adventures are far behind me now unfortunately.

This is the thing, I have no idea. It may well be. Trouble is I'm very ignorant of such things. I think though, that it probably represents a hole in one layer of rock, which leads to another. 

But, you mention a speleological past, I'd be very interested to hear anything about this.
