Sometimes when a subterranean stream flows onto another plane it is through a hole and the view through is of a smooth flat bed. Could it be that the feature you describe is the remnant of an underground streamway as water flows through such a soft point onto another bedding plane?. My speleological adventures are far behind me now unfortunately. This is the thing, I have no idea. It may well be. Trouble is I'm very ignorant of such things. I think though, that it probably represents a hole in one layer of rock, which leads to another. But, you mention a speleological past, I'd be very interested to hear anything about this.
