UM-Bot Posted October 23, 2016 #1 Share Posted October 23, 2016 The promising technology enables a three-dimensional image to be suspended in mid-air using sound waves. http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/news/300078/scientists-build-3d-floating-e-ink-display

Parsec Posted October 24, 2016 #4 Share Posted October 24, 2016 I wonder which are the side effects of being exposed for prolonged periods of time to high pitch, high frequency sound waves. For sure you wouldn't be able to watch the tv with your dog anymore!

Maybe it will be OK As the article said, this sin't ready for prime time yet.

If I got it right, you should be able to interact with the hologram, so theoretically it should be "open" let's say, and thus my concerns about exposure. If you think about it, we have high frequency devices to keep mosquitoes away, so possibly it's harmless. I guess it depends on how powerful the sound waves are, but as you wrote, it's still in its infancy, so time will tell.

Krater Posted November 16, 2016 #10 Share Posted November 16, 2016 This is very old news. This tech has been around for decades. It uses a standing wave to suspend styrofoam beads and is not practical for much of anything. All these guys did was make an array. You'd need tens of thousands of them working together to create any decent resolution and a slight breeze will disrupt the whole thing. There are many other more practical hologram technologies already in existence or in the works. It's neat, but will never be more than a novelty.
