+ouija ouija Posted December 4, 2016 #1 Share Posted December 4, 2016 So, the 'Esc' key doesn't work and I started looking around online to find out how to fix this. Everything I found said 'press SHIFT, then Esc' ...... fine, except that I don't have a 'shift' key! Is there some odd icon/combination of letters & numbers on the key rather than the word 'shift'? I've even been to the online Fujitsu LIFEBOOK A series manual ...... it has a totally different keyboard to mine! I also have a CHERRY DW 3000 wireless keyboard which hasn't got a 'shift' key. What is going on? What has replaced the 'shift' key?
Likely Guy Posted December 5, 2016 #2 Share Posted December 5, 2016 How did you capitalize your post without a shift key? Mine doesn't say 'shift', it's just an 'up arrow'.

seeder Posted December 5, 2016 #7 Share Posted December 5, 2016 and my laptop has a splash proof keyboard....... which means any grit cant fall thru .... like on old keyboards, so can hide under a key making it seem to not work.... blow very hard around the stuck key....shake the laptop, or use a straw to make the air pressure more direct/powerful

seeder Posted December 5, 2016 #12 Share Posted December 5, 2016 (edited) Ive also heard of people using compressed air to blow crap out of laptop keyboards, comes in smallish aerosol cans heres one http://www.stationeryplanet.com/5-star-spray-duster-can-hfc-free-compressed-gas-flammable-400ml-p-17251.aspx?gclid=CIPI3e7q29ACFUONGwodV14PuA Edited December 5, 2016 by seeder

+ouija ouija Posted December 5, 2016 Author #15 Share Posted December 5, 2016 (edited) THANK YOU, GUYS! You are all wonderful!! The problem wasn't physical but it's good to have that information about 'crap dislodgers' anyway. In my defence, I am way too old to have learned about computers at school or even college so I'm pretty much self taught which means I only understand what half the keys do! Why is the 'shift' key so-called? What exactly does it shift? Why don't keyboards come with instruction manuals? GRR! Edited December 5, 2016 by ouija ouija When I first got a computer I looked everywhere for an 'Idiot's Guide to the Keyboard', you know, with little arrows pointing to each key and an explanation for it ..... couldn't find one anywhere. I mean, what are all those 'F1', 'F2' etc keys all about?

seeder Posted December 5, 2016 #19 Share Posted December 5, 2016 Yes the function keys, or F keys, dont really do anything for the average user...so can be ignored. Ive reinstalled a lot of operating systems for mates....and its only when youre working with installations that your PC may say...( from a black or blue screen background) press the F12 or whatever button.... I cant think of ever using them apart from those times. The typical user just needs letter and number keys. Oh and the shift key of course I didnt even have a PC till year 2000, and Im 50, so never learned a thing at school either.... about computers that is. I just had 2 patient nerdy friends advise and help me. Plus I did a Job Centre course for a week to learn to use a PC for business, to update my skills....which was pretty much using Word to create docs and of course, the dreaded spreadsheets in Excel...well they were dreaded before I knew how to use them...like most things.. but easy once you know how I understand you tho, my modernish laptop doesnt name the shift key or even the caps lock key...or even the enter key....but they are always in the same place regardless
SHaYap Posted December 5, 2016 #20 Share Posted December 5, 2016 The Function keys is mainly a substitute for the mouse when you don't have that inclination to reach for the mouse everytime you need to interact with Windows ... Its most useful when you do a lot of text base activities like Word and Excel or Email and Filing/ naming renaming files ... its faster too ~ I remember a student of mine complaining about needing three hands to type with a computer .. she is a secretary and was very fast on a conventional typewriter, when she had to port over to the PC she was frustrated about the time she had to access the menus and therefore had to reach for the mouse ... with keyboard short cuts she was up and flying after a few hours of lessons ... it is very convenient once you get the hang of it ... Most Applications has to follow the conventions like Ctrl+S is Save ... Ctrl+N is New ... etc etc ... Most useful is the Alt+Tab ... when you have a lot of Applications running in the background, much faster than reaching for the mouse and maximizing them from the taskbar ... its better to keep the Apps open than to Open Close Open Close whenever you need them, the way Windows Applications is programmed to run its just better to leave them all open rather than multiple Open and Close instances ... ~
