Van full of gas bottles rams offices of right-wing political group, driver in custody.

even the bloody ACL doesn't deserve that.

I DO like how some ACL supporters are blaming radical gay groups or paedophiles though. Never miss an opportunity to kick them gays, fellas *SMH*.

Well, we honestly have no idea who attacked the ACL, but there's not a lack of people who hate the ACL. They're Australia's Alt-right.

Id not leap to blame the Allan's Snackbars before ruling out someone with a grudge against the ACL. The fact it happened at night, and even the driver survives suggests it's a FU to the ACL and not Jihadiots.

Okay, but my plea still stands, regardless of the idiots responsible.

Happy no one was killed.

The alt right preaches things others don't like to hear so the left tries to kill them.  How tolerant of them.

Sky News just reported the driver was interviewed, and its not "religiously, politically or idealogically motivated".

Which sounds like cobblers.

Let's not jump to conclusions; it could be that the van's cargo caught fire and the distracted driver hit the building. Then the cargo exploded.

On the other hand, if that's the case ... the Religious nutters will say it is a sign from the most 'high' ...

Still, I wonder why someone is driving around that part of Canberra, at that time of night with that type of cargo.

Did he get the address wrong?

In Malaysia those kind of cargo is restricted to off peak and strictly AM hours only on low traffic volume routes ~

Looking at pictures floating around the internet, the gas cylinders appear more the type used for a barbecue, not for gas supply to a property.

The van looks like it was driven into the, off-street, car-park.

The location is particularly out of the way.  I reckon the only person you are likely to encounter in that area, at that time, would be a mobile rent-a-guard.

(My daughters were born about a block away from where the incident occurred.  But, I haven't lived in that 'city' for over ten years.)

Whether, or not, the ACL were a target, the driver's mere presence on the property, I expect, would raise apprehensions.

If it was an intentional  there must have been some way to set off the exploding gas bottles  and that would have been found  ?

If the van caught fire , due to some other reason, that may have set them off ?

ACTPOL are saying the driver appears to have ignited the gas bottles; but '... his actions were not ... idealogically motivated.'

He parked in the property's off-the-street parking; but, the ACL has not been confirmed, nor ruled out, as a target.

The actions appear deliberate.

Personal grievance?

I just thought they have some interesting neighbours.

But yes... I'm just an user on the internet snd I'm sure the experts have it under control.

And we have no idea if the perpetrator is "The Left" or if he tried to "Kill Them".

In any case, the incident happened at 9.30pm - a time when pretty much every office building is going to be vacant.

It could be, but for the time being I'm willing to give the police the benefit of the doubt. They have already spoken to the man's family, so that may well form the basis of their assessment.

Yes, the location is part of a precinct for professionals and professional organisations - lobby groups (like the ACL), union headquarters, medical specialists, lawyers; outside normal office hours the precinct shuts down. For example, the only eateries in there are only open during business hours - there isn't anywhere in there you could go for dinner.

As GD pointed out, there's a (private) hospital adjacent to the precinct (Calvary John James), and the most direct route from the ACL building to the Canberra Hospital passes within about 100 metres of CJJ. CJJ has been there for over 40 years (I had my tonsils out there when I was a little younger than I am now), and it's well known in the community. Now CJJ doesn't have an emergency department, but it does have nursing staff on duty 24 hours a day. So it wouldn't take much banging on the front door to attract the attention of medically competent staff who'd be able to provide first aid until an ambulance arrived. Yet instead the man walked five kilometres (along a route I know well) to the city's largest public hospital.

I don't know what to conclude from that, but I'd be interested to hear some theories.

Incidentally, why the quotes around 'city', GD? Canberra's as much a city as any other place with 400,000 people in it. We even have our own nutters and weirdos. Or is it something to do with the fact that we have to put up with 222 people elected by the good citizens of Australia-That-Isn't-Canberra for a few months each year?

They do indeed. Across the road is Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles Australia. Next door (on the far side of the ACL building's car park) is the Vietnam Veteran's Counselling Service. Just down the street is the Australian Institute of International Affairs. The ACL's building itself seems to also house a lighting shop.

My (uninformed) suspicion is that the man was at the place he intended to be at, although I wonder if there may be a simple non-religious problem at the heart of this: about 25 years ago a man drove a ute filled with gas bottles into the front of the Jolimont Building in the city centre of Canberra (office building and interstate bus terminal). He tried to detonate the gas bottles, but managed only to start a fire. After shooting at police and firies he killed himself. The reason for the attack was an attempt to kill his ex-girlfriend, who worked in the building. Now there are obvious differences between the two cases (the Jolimont attack happened about 7.30am, for example), but the similarities are striking, too.

Hey @Peter B it's all good.

I had my tonsils out in the same place I was born; and, now they've built the National Museum there.

I wasn't knocking Canberra. I was a bit obscure but I @Third Eye's comment about low-traffic areas. Ive been back twice this year and the lack of traffic is noticeable.

I've used your argument many times; and also point out that Canberra's federal electorates are the most populous in the nation. Your votes count for less.

No.

I said "... we have no idea if the perpetrator is "The Left" or if he tried to "Kill Them"."

In other words, I'm talking about this case, not what other people have said in other circumstances.

Apologies for the thread necromancy but...

The man charged over this attack has apparently killed himself overnight:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-09-25/accused-christian-lobby-arsonist-dies/8980882

On the one hand he told police he didn't like the Australian Christian Lobby. But on the other hand mental illness seems to have played a part in the man's actions, both last December and last night.

Wow, how do you reconcile these two posts together?

And just to avoid misunderstandings, I am not referencing to the "murderous left", but rather to the poison filled post by Ashotep.

Seriously, at the time you still didn't know exactly what happened, let alone the reason why, and you didn't waste a split second throwing random accusations towards people you don't agree with?

By the way, apparently your assumptions were wrong.

Thank you for the update Peter, I wouldn't call it necromancing this time.

And I missed this thread at the time, so to me it's even more welcome.

Ah no, that's not about being politically uncorrect, rather logically wrong.

You can't preach for kumbaya in one sentence (or in this case, like a post that does it) and then spit poison in the other.
That is illogical.
