Angela Merkel is destroying Europe

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's celebrated open-door policy encouraged the migration of more than 1 million refugees in 2015, and hundreds of thousands more in 2016. It was lauded as a courageous triumph of humanitarianism. Even in 2016's year-end accolades, Merkel has been given hosannas for "keeping the doors ajar."

But after last week's Berlin attack, in which a man — suspected to be a Tunisian migrant — intentionally plowed an 18-wheeler into a crowded Christmas market, killing 12 and injuring dozens more, it's fair to say that Merkel's celebrated policy has actually been a disaster. After all, "keeping the doors ajar" is precisely how a naive person learns of the bad intentions of an intruder. And Merkel is learning a hard lesson, indeed. She said that welcoming this enormous wave of refugees was the only way to be true to "European values." But the current wave of terrorism and the enormous fear of crime and disorder in European cities is proving mortally dangerous not just to her own party, but to the European Union itself.

We were continually posting these stories about Merkel's open-door policy in the run up to the Referendum, and yet you make post after post slamming Britain for voting to leave the EU.

Did I miss something?

The repeating pattern continues.

Merkel is totally incapable of representing what the majority of her people want on immigration. Ignore whatever lies, manipulations and distortions she comes out with and simply vote for your own Trump candidate in next years elections. Its the only way the mass immigration will be brought to a stop.

Frau #Allwelcome Merkel deserves a 4th term in office. It would be unfair of the German people to elect someone else and burden them with Merkels consequences of policy which are coming down the track, far better to re-elect Merkel and have her face the music.

That's crap! Brexiteers like yourself have made moaning about the EU for all the various frivolous reasons a 40 year "love affair." This silly but well meant gesture from Merkel is unfortunately ammo for everyone that hates Europe. So please don't talk about immigration as a destructive issue when no country has ever gained more from the inflow and outflow of immigrants, than Britain. In this case Europe choose the wrong immigrants to open the door too and at the wrong time.

Anyway... The point of posting this is that Germany and Merkel in particular, has far too much power to dictate to Europe. Europe is lopsided and with the disengagement of the UK its only gonna worse.

The only thing that's "crap" is an Aussie waffling on and on about Brexit without any factual knowledge of Britain, other than biased internet articles, and thinking he knows better than those of us who were born and bred here, and live and breathe here every day.

Oh, and then having the audacity to slam Merkel for destroying Europe while telling us - from your perch across the globe - that we should be fixing her mistakes.

So I'm not entitled to an opinion? That's a bit cruel.

Ohh, please... don't start playing the wounded party now.

This has nothing to do with an "opinion." These are international forums, and you can post whatever you wish within the forum rules, as can I.

This is about your perpetual and disrespectful posts towards the 52% of the Britsh population that voted to leave the EU, even though as far as we know you've never even set foot here. Add to that this latest thread announcing "Merkel is destroying Europe" with her immigration policy, and you deserve nothing but derision for the irony alone.

Tell me, if I picked up on an Australian politcal story which was close to your heart, and made post after post slamming your position and basically assassinating the character of your friends and family, all based on severely skewed internet articles, what would you think?

Yeah... I thought so.

By the way, I'd hardly describe the "destruction of Europe" as you describe it as a "silly but well meant gesture." We're not talking about your granny buying you some ugly socks for Christmas. We're talking about the leader of one of the most powerful economies in the world making a huge error in judgement that will have consequences for decades to come.

Had Britain voted to remain in the EU, does anything about the approach of Brussels suggest to you that we'd have any chance at all of changing Frau Merkel's ambitions from within? All we'd have done is strengthen her position.

By the way, one more time, as it apparently isn't sinking in... it has nothing to do with "hating Europe." You're not only doing a disservice to the British when you spam this nonsense, you're doing a disservice to other great countries on the continent by equating Europe with the EU. You need to at least learn this distinction if you want your views to be taken seriously.

Perpetual and disrespectful? What about the other significant 48% that have become persona non grata's in their own country's brexit debate... what's wrong with advocating for them?

You very nearly paid the Poms a compliment there. You almost said that it does in fact have some importance. I'm sure you didn't mean to say that really did you?

Not to mention that you nearly implied that the EU isn't in fact perfect. Do be careful. Herrs Juncker and Tusk will not be pleased, comrade.

I don't think i have ever hidden the fact that the EU isn't perfect. Then again what is? Brexit certainly isn't. It's no guessing game that Brexit is a backward step. That's my point. Also, a bit comical GMT the socialist calling me a comrade. Especially with your anti-globalisation anti-establishment paranoia.

It's a backward step to remain tied to an imperial project that's falling to pieces even as we watch? And I'm a socialist as well as a fascist (for supporting the Nasty Man?) It's all very confusing these days isn't it. :sk

When you say failed what exactly do you mean?

If you really can't see that, Cap'n, your critical faculties need recalibrating.

Perhaps you just rely for your information on what you see in the papers.

Pot Kettle Black the UK preaching about being anti-imperial.

The British Empire faded away after the second WW; there isn't actually one now to speak of, unless you do count Gibraltar, St Helena and the Falklands as a mighty global empire .

(Don't say "but Australia has to struggle under the yoke of Queen Elizabeth's tyranny", you know the Monarchy has no real political power.)

Silly and well meant? Like they couldn't see the clear problems that would arise from mass immigrating people from third world nations? Are you kidding me?

If you can't see the difference between the UK's immigration policies - from countries in the Commonwealth, who had historical links and shared a common culture - and the policies, if you can even call it that, of the EU, you'd have to ask how much you do know .

That's pretty much what Obama is hoping to land Trump with, isn't it.

Merkel's arrogance and she thought herself as the ruler of Europe are going to be her downfall, she had no more right to open the gates of Europe than any other EU leader.

Actually the UK is still an empire. England, Scotland, Wales and NI.
