Jockey in amazing race ride brain-snap

A jockey riding in a race in Adelaide, South Australia has many scratching their heads in wonderment, after he deliberately steered his 50/1 outsider into the path of a fancied runner, that threatened to challenge the leader in the race, a 4/1 chance ridden by.......his girlfriend. This incredibly dangerous manoeuvre, which occurs at the 200 metre mark, nearly dislodged another jockey, who showed remarkable horsemanship to resume riding out his mount within a couple of seconds. The offender has been stood down from all riding, and a penalty will be handed out this week. Hard to see how he can't get life disqualification. But the mystery is, how did he imagine he'd get away with it ! Sadly, the jockey has "form" for crazy behaviour on the track, having been pinched for attempting to steal the whip of another rider, mid-race, after dropping his own. Click on "watch video" at top right of page, to see the race: https://www.theracessa.com.au/race/5117165

Hi, Habitat.

The last time that I saw a horse disqualified from a race, the disqualification was no consolation to many for the pair of horses it effectively obstructed.

Bumped horses sometimes aggressively run toward the offender.   Should a favored horse break slow, an opportunistic jockey is apt to more impede the hesitant horse's forward progress.  Because there is a fine line between a green, domineering or crazy horse and an unsportsmanlike jockey, how out of line the latter can get is often moot in view of the official result.

The subject jockey of your post was probably jealous of his girlfriend's having a better horse, which usually involves a better trainer as well.  The woman's distancing herself from the madman would be such a prudent career choice for her that he deserves to be lovelorn.  Moreover, unless the man's license is permanently revoked, their continued romance could be quite incriminating to both were he insane enough to repeat his offense and, thereby, implicate her in race fixing.

Little as most people like to do with loose canons in general, they can be deadly to both horses and riders when traveling 40-50mph.
