2016 Was Earth's Hottest Year on Record

The Earth is warming and 2016 proved to be the hottest year since record keeping began more than a century ago, scientists reported today (Jan. 18). Last year's average temperatures over land and sea surfaces were the highest ever seen since 1880, and were 1.69 degrees Fahrenheit (0.94 degrees Celsius) above the 20th-century average, according to scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). There was no land area across the planet that experienced temperatures that were cooler than average for the year, they said. In fact, 2016 marks the third consecutive record-warm year for the globe. January through August were each the warmest month on record, according to NOAA.
