While we're on Noobs...

Years ago I visited the Mummy: Secrets of The Tomb exhibit at Queensland Museum.

There was a screening of a documentary, narrated by Patrick Stewart, on the burial customs and techniques using a scan of the mummy of a priest Nesperennub. IIRC, near the beginning of the film there was a brief explanation on the hieroglyphs and the construction of Nesperennub's name. Ever since I've had the impression that the hieroglyphs matched the syllables of the name; and that there was a glyph, of combination of glyphs, that matched the phonetic 'NOOB'.

I occasionally google for new information - when it occurs to me to do so - but, I've never really got around to posing the question to you...

Mr. Duck, you are correct about the glyphs in Nesperrenub's name (hieroglyphs represent phonetic values). You are also correct about "Noob." See this pretty picture:

gold.jpg

The odd-looking device on which the goddess is sitting is the triliteral glyph with the sound value nwb (so, basically "noob"). It's the final component in Nesperrenub's name.

But this glyph is arguably more germane to your avatar than to our dear booNyzarC. You see, nwb was the ancient Egyptian word for "gold." If you ever want to go ancient Egyptian, your name Golden Duck would be sA nwb.

Okay, back to our program. :P

Mate, thanks a lot!  You're better than Google!

So it would be something like this?

The understanding of the phonetic representation did initially come from one of your posts before I went to the exhibit in 2011. I'd forgotten the details of the elements of Nesperennub's name and was never subsequently able to find them.

My name and avatar are inspired by a cricketing term.

Said in a think Aussie accent "Sa noob" (so noob) might be a pretty apt cry on the field.

That's really neat, Golden Duck. How did you build that set of hieroglyphs? That's definitely one way to do it (but with over 800 glyphs in the repertoire, there are quite a few ways).

I've actually heard of Nesperennub. In fact, I'm pretty sure I have a book somewhere here in my library at home that is all about him and his CT scans. When I was typing out my earlier post I wasn't at home, so I was online looking through photos of the coffin just to make sure I had the glyphs right. It was tough to find because the name is in the central register down by the coffin's feet, and not a lot of photos show it clearly. The exhibition you attended looked really interesting. I wish I'd been able to see it.

LOL I'm an American, so I know pretty much nothing about cricket. Hasn't caught here, although soccer (what everyone else in the world calls football) is getting more popular every year, especially here in Chicago.

I never did hear what happened with Becky's Mom. I used to cross paths with her quite often.

Paranoid Android left (or is on a sabbatical) not too long ago. Got married I heard, and is setting up a family. No time for long discussions online anymore I guess.

I remember Kratos and Joc also. I thought Joc was still here under another name?

Before the last upgrade I went through my "Friends" list and saw many of them hadn't been on in years. That was sad too.

I talked to Becky's Mom yesterday. LOL. I She and I have been friends on Facebook for years. she's doing great! Busy with her kiddos!

I like to peek in here now and again to see if all you UM-Senior-Citizens have started comparing illnesses and meds yet.

(Illnesses that have the best doctors in the country baffled)

There's an empty rocking chair here on the porch, all ready for you. Sit down, throw a blanket over your legs, and join us as we b**** about ailments and medication side effects.

(Where's my Viagra?)

Mind, I live in Florida. About to rain is the general state of things.

Try living in Britain.  There's no "about" about it.

This is my tenth year (as of July 7). In fact my join date was 07/07/07. I'm surprised none of the woo posters have ever tried to make something significant of that. In any case, I've pulled up that chair and am a-rockin' back and forth as I cradle my myriad of prescriptions.

But if we're talking the ancient Egyptian deity Min, he's not really going to help you with your old-age infirmities. He's a fertilely god and he's especially known for his...well, here, a picture is worth a thousand words:

I did mention Viagra in my last post, after all.

Try chatting up women when your birthday is Valentine's day.  It's either a very quick "Yay!" or a rapid, "Nay, you BSer!"

Hah! Well on the chatting up girls bit, my hobbies are history and wood turning. Doesn't get you far.

Somehow you talk about primordial mounds and hand turned pens and they get the idea Im being euphemistic.

Read some poetry and talk about that instead.  Then hit them with something like this......

The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and endless skies, my love
To the dark and endless skies, my love

And the first time ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move in my hands
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command, my love
That was there at my command, my love

And the first time ever I lay with you
I felt your heart so close to mine
And I knew our joy would fill the earth
And last 'til the end of time, my love
That it would last 'til the end of time, my love

The first time ever I saw your face.

;)

You mean, you never ask the ladies if they like wood?

Goodness, I can't believe a Moderator just said that!
