Still Waters Posted January 23, 2017 #1 Share Posted January 23, 2017 A group of scientists from the University of California are working on a plan to figure out if beer can be brewed on the moon. Now, they work on a fermentation vessel not too big that can be easy transported. If everything goes well, by the end of the year, they can ship it to the Moon via an Indian spacecraft. If they successfully see how yeast works in the space, this can enable them to develop new pharmaceutical products. The products that contain yeast will also be helped to develop. https://stocknewsusa.com/2017/01/23/beer-to-be-made-on-the-moon/

Hawken Posted January 23, 2017 #4 Share Posted January 23, 2017 If a colony was established on the moon, gotta have some brew to party.
Merc14 Posted January 23, 2017 #5 Share Posted January 23, 2017 (edited) The article was pretty poorly written so I have no idea why they'd want to do this? What properties does the Moon possess that will change the fermentation process so drastically that it is worth shipping raw materials to the Moon and then retrieving some new product? Edit: Ok I found anther article and apparently it is simply to see if/how yeast will ferment on the Moon so future colonies can feed themselves and produce pharmaceuticals. Shows the actual vessel as well. 'When we heard that there was an opportunity to design an experiment that would go up on India's moonlander, we thought we could combine our hobby with the competition by focusing on the viability of yeast in outer space.' Understanding how yeast behaves on the moon is not just important for brewing beer in space, the students said. It is also important for the development of pharmaceuticals and yeast-containing foods, like bread.
