Merc14 Posted January 23, 2017 #1 Share Posted January 23, 2017 Excerpts from the article: The satellite formerly known as GOES-R (so Prince, right?) has transmitted its first images back to Earth, and they are flooring. From the details on the face of the moon to the incredible resolution of cumulus over the Caribbean, these first pixels portend a sunny future for NOAA’s new GOES-16 satellite. As we’ve written before, GOES-R satellite has six instruments, two of which are weather-related. The Advanced Baseline Imager, developed by Harris Corp., is the “camera” that looks down on Earth. The pictures it sends back will be clearer and more detailed than what’s created by the current satellites. The ABI can scan half the Earth — or the “full disk” — in five minutes. If forecasters want to home in on an area of severe weather, it can scan that region every 30 seconds. Weather radars can’t even scan faster than six minutes. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2017/01/23/the-first-images-from-goes-r-have-come-in-and-theyre-absolutely-incredible/?utm_term=.6cfc77692f72 Images have been shrunk so go to article to see at higher resolution

Merc14 Posted March 7, 2017 Author #4 Share Posted March 7, 2017 (edited) Generational leap in technology should help meteorologists to warn about quickly strengthening storms minutes earlier via its lightning detector (not sure why article link is a C&P only) www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2017/03/06/lightning-detection-satellite/98778554/ Edited March 7, 2017 by Merc14
