20 Year Old Fake or Golden Film?

1963

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I just noticed that this pretty genre famous and devicive video was in fact Twenty Years old this year, ... It has always been one of those films that for some reason, I still find curious! ...and wondered if anyone knew any more [actual facts] about it than I already do?

This is the very famous video claimed to be of a UFO crashing in the desert of the
White Sands Missile Range in 1996-7.And has been one of the most hotly debated films that I have seen ever since I first went online some years ago. .. "It is a genuine crashing saucer video and therefor proof positive of the ETH!" .. and "No! don't be silly, it's obviously a simple video of a missile testing exercise!" .. "How come 'this missile' is glowing and shaped like a classic flying saucer?... and how come it bounces instead of hitting the ground and exploding like a 'missile' then!?" .."Obviously a missile because you can clearly see a con-trail behind it! and it proves that it was a staged event because of the set up of the recording device!" .. etc. etc! .. And as is far too customary in this genre, it goes on and on [with many accusations of the dreaded 'obvious CGI' words thrown in of course] for the last 15 years or so [since the film was first aired] . But also far too prevailing in the genre, even after this remarkable film has been in the public domain for so long... nothing definite has been resolved! .. Is it real? or is it a 'hoax'? .. nowhere have I seen any definitive investigative answer on the validity of this film. .. Sure, we all have our opinions on the authenticity of the film... but [as all too often] that's all it is! Even the CGI screamers have failed to put their money where their mouths are , and 'proved it'.
I'm not saying that I ever believed that this film was indeed the smoking gun of the 'crashed UFO theory' [a' la Roswell type event] but equally, I did not buy into the 'blindly acceptance' of it being just a simple missile test either! ... And though I admit to finding this video somewhat alluring, I equally expect that this brilliantly-subjective film clip to turn out to be a complete nihility in the great pantheon of ufological evidence.
In the film, a brilliantly glowing white elliptical or football-shaped craft plummets from the sky, skips violently across the ground and , hits the floor again and then spectacularly explodes. Where the film came from, who shot it, or even when it was filmed, has remained uncertain. Although according to anomaly-investigative journalist 'Mike Smith', much to it's detriment, there seems to be a couple of overwhelmingly leading candidates that.. if were proven to be the originators of the film.. would certainly sound the death knell for the remarkable video. .. as far as the remote possibility of this being a genuine anomalous event, that is.

Smith was told by Peter Gersten, former director of Citizens Against
UFO Secrecy (CAUS), stated, "Ted Loman produced the video on UFO
crashes and created the opening scene of the skipping UFO."
Loman is a well-known UFO researcher. In 1973, Loman became
convinced he needed to travel to a mountain in Baja, Mexico,
where aliens were going to land, pick him up and return him to
his home planet. Instead, his family forced him to go to a
psychiatrist, and for the most part, he filed the incident away
in his mind for around 17 years. Then, in 1989, he suffered a
severe injury while melting silver in a laboratory - an injury
that cost him his left eyesight, left him wearing a pirate-style
eye patch and gave his father plenty of time to read to him
about UFOs.
This led to 1997, when Loman began hosting and producing a
weekly cable access show in Tucson, Arizona - UFOAZ Talks, a
live, one-hour show that examined the reported presence of UFOs
in the West. In 1997, the show, by then widely syndicated,
changed its name to Off The Record, and in 2002, the show went
off the air.
Loman moved to northern Idaho and finished work on a documentary
about UFO crashes, entitled It Fell From the Sky. It was as
the opening scene for that hard-to-find documentary that the
footage of the alleged White Sands crash may have first
appeared.
Loman is currently on vacation in Mexico and unavailable for
comment, but Gersten, who served with Loman on CAUS's board of
directors, said, "The only thing that isn't real about (It Fell
From the Sky) is that opening scene. That is not real ... I
don't remember if it was actually CGI or some sort of computer
enhancement."
In an undated online clip from UFO Connections, a Sacramento,
Calif., cable-access show, Loman played the video of the crash,
said the footage had not yet been professionally analyzed and
claimed he didn't know when it was made.
Of the film, he said, "That came to me through Jaime Maussan.
Right. And, uh, uh, I don't know where Jaime got it. Well, I
just don't know where... it's best to say I don't know where
Jaime got this. But, I, uh, I believe it to be at White Sands.
But I cannot, and I will not, confirm or deny that it is, uh,
I'll leave it up to the viewers to, to, see it and watch it, and
decide for themselves."
Bringing Maussan into the story, unfortunately, does not improve
the film's credibility. Maussan is a popular Mexican television
host - the self-proclaimed "Mike Wallace of Mexico" - and has a
reputation as a recklessly gullible and even dishonest promoter
of UFO hoaxes. His Web site is loaded with the sort of footage
almost anyone with a trash can lid and a camcorder could
produce, and he has inspired such online articles as
UFOWatchDog.com's Jaime Maussan: Damaging Serious Ufology One
Hoax at a Time.
The film of the White Sands crash either came from Maussan or
was made by Loman for his documentary. The absolute truth still
remains to be learned, but unless Loman tries and succeeds at a
little interstellar hitchhiking while in Mexico, the truth will
come out eventually.

...I don't know what you guys think but , On the assumption that this ubiquitous film is proven [beyond all doubt] to be a hoax, then my money would be on Loman, rather than Maussan, simply by the reasoning that 'The film was far too good for Maussan to pass on'!
... Just as a side note, I always thought that the image depicted in this clip, reminded me strongly of a photo that can be seen in all of the usual books and web-sites of what appears to me to be an identical 'object' in the same basic locale 40 years previously. .. And couldn't help thinking that if this film was indeed a fake.. then could the 'fraudster' have had the earlier photograph and it's 40th anniversary in mind?...

For a classic flying saucer it certainly doesn't look saucer like.

I agree, missile malfunction and crash.  This little film is one that has always intrigued me. Does anyone know anything about it?  It supposedly was shot on the Nellis test range.

Hi Merc, Yes I agree that this film is, and always has been intriguing. I've done a lot of searching and couple of threads on it in the past and still have to admit to being baffled by what this 'crazy little thing' could be?

I have flown in the Nellis area MOAs/restricted areas many times and I know they have different cameras out there for different duties. In our case they'd try and catch us coming over a ridge line so they could simulate a SAM shot and get an image so we could see how easily tracked we are if we don't cross the ridge correctly.  I have no knowledge of the cameras themselves or what other duties they perform but I am not confident in the conclusions the "expert " reached as he didn't mention ranges and altitudes or what the main function of that camera really is.   The ones they used on us were designed to track airborne craft operating on the range at a distance and track the target, ie. they were more concerned with tracking distant objects moving at hundreds of MPH  rather than detailed photographs.  Probably not expla9in9ing that well but maybe ChrLzs can decipher my gibberish as he may have experience with these specialized cameras.

I'm all gibbered out...  Yes they were specialised and may have been experimental one-off camera systems as well.. but it's not an area I am familiar with, and about all I can add to this is that with the Nellis one, I find it interesting that no-one (afaik) has ever been able to show more footage from that camera, so we could verify the source...  I have a vague suspicion it was either a fake that no-one was interested in denying, or perhaps a delliberate fake leaked by the military and used as a distraction/scare tactic.

On the first one, again, it's not one I've spent much time on.  About all i can add is to caution against thinking the 'glow' is highly significant or even real..   Clearly this is at least a second gen copy, probably several more..  Once that happens, the nature of the copying processes added to what is possibly already a poor quality film in terms of contrast, can lead to exaggerated or reduced brightness or contrast  - ie just because an area looks like it glows doesn't mean anything other than it was lighter than the surrounding scene.. maybe in the original scene it was simply bright white/chrome and sunlit....  Let's face it, all we see is something apparently hitting the ground and bouncing upwards and then - presumably badly weakened by the first impact - it disintegrates on the second impact.  I could do that with a few tries at a piece of ice thrown at an appropriate angle....  And I see no reason why it couldn't be a test of a missile / aircraft / bomb design (think Dambusters..).

For some things, there is simply nowhere near enough information to make any definitive judgements or even apply much in the way of analysis.

Without further verifiable information, sadly I think they are both dead ends.  For now.

Oh, and may I say it's a pity that one of these really got the Jaime Maussan kiss of death... :D

In regards to the White Sands “UFO” crash video, I find it very hard to believe extraterrestrials would crash on Earth after travelling so far to get here.  Perhaps I’m wrong, but it just doesn’t make much sense at all.  What’s easier to believe is the video is exactly what toast and Taun suggested…  failed missile test.

In regards to the Nellis Air Force Base “UFO” video, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that flight footage of Col. Steve Austin’s experimental aircraft before it crashed?
