Robots might have 'electronic persons' status

The European Parliament has passed a resolution which calls on the European Commission to put forward proposals for new EU legislation that addresses "legal questions related to the development and use of robotics and AI foreseeable in the next 10 to 15 years", together with accompanying guidance and codes of conduct to cover issues such as the ethical design and operation of such machines.

In its resolution, MEPs said the Commission, as part of its proposals, should consider whether "a specific legal status for robots in the long run" should be provided for "so that at least the most sophisticated autonomous robots could be established as having the status of electronic persons responsible for making good any damage they may cause, and possibly applying electronic personality to cases where robots make autonomous decisions or otherwise interact with third parties independently".

So does that mean Robots (or AI systems) should be given a salary? Pay taxes? Be given the vote?

Seems a bit early to be making these decisions right now... What they should be focusing on (IMO) is defining what the limits of AI abilities (cognition) are to be... Not necessarily to prevent achieving it, but to state that at "this" point it is no longer a "robot" but a "person"... basically they should reach a consensus on what is "sapience" or more specifically - "Sentience" .... If they really want to open that can of worms...

Giving corporations, teams working 24/7 around the globe to further dubious agendas, such status has undermined We the People.  Automation has, by now, nearly eliminated the need for employees.  Next, were robots to be granted personhood, a comrade of yours might be charged with murder for his defending your neighborhood against a weaponized robot, e.g.
