Still Waters Posted February 23, 2017 #1 Share Posted February 23, 2017 Using wood pellets to generate low-carbon electricity is a flawed policy that is speeding up not slowing down climate warming. That's according to a new study which says wood is not carbon neutral and emissions from pellets are higher than coal. Subsidies for biomass should be immediately reviewed, the author says. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-39053678

Subsidies for biomass should be immediately reviewed, the author says. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-39053678 Unfortunately, the BBC article provided nothing to back up the claim. Maybe the original study did, but it didn't get quoted here. True that planted seedlings will not replace wood volume cut for biomass. But that forgets about natural regeneration which foresters in the US highly favor. First, it's cheaper. Second, you get better quality trees from natural seeding than from artificial. Did the study even look at that? Thinning products can be left on the ground to rot or can be turned into a useful product. Firewood/biomass allows at least some of that energy to be recovered. Sawmill waste in the form of slabs and edgings is biomass. A lot of what is being sent to Europe is coming from this source. Once again, we can either do something useful with it, or let it decay into carbon dioxide. In short, I would rather see the original article than something written by an environmental writer whose credentials are anything but established.
